Your dog is very very upset! Dogs will bite at tails, pull out hair etc. when they are not stimulated enough. I have a Border Collie... very high functioning dog! If you don't play with her, love on her and basically give her as much attention as you would a 5 yr old.. she will become destructive! Labs are really good dogs, usually they just need some extra pmapering and a lot of exercise.. this does not mean let them run around in the back yard!
Play ball, frisbee, run with them.. anything that you and the dog can do together as a team! All your Lab wants to know is that YOU love them!

Sounds like he can have a skin disorder like mange. I suggest taking him to the vet right away because it is also possible that he has an internal parasite that needs to be treated with antibiotics. Im speaking from experience my dog just went through something very similar 2 weeks ago. The vet gave a shot (not sure of the name) and also gave antibiotic cream and since then it has cleared up. Good luck.

Fleas concentrate in that area, it is actually the saliva of the flea that is making your dog itch. Causing a flea allergy. Go to your vet and purchase Frontline or Advantage. The problem should clear in a week or two and the hair should grow back.

I agree, fleas or mange. Would take to vet to determine what the cause it. I had a Boxer with that problem and with the correct med and dosage it cleared up quickly for him.

Sounds like fleas. Try Frontline for fleas. It works great. But, I would put it not only at nape of neck, but a little in the middle of back, but nowhere he can reach.

My cousin's dog had this and it spread all over the dog's neck and head. It's called mange. Take your dog to the vet for treatment.

there might be something wrong with the tail or just a habit. talk to your vet about docking it (removing it) it is not cruel if it has to be done.
