It has just come to the time when Lewis is to be retired. He has no desire to come back and fight anyone. He hung around looking for the fights that would build his name and place in history but there just wasn't many out there. He finally got his match with Tyson and beat him decisively. He already beat Hollyfield and had gotten a win over Vitali Klitchko. While waiting for his big fights he has gotten himself knocked out by Hassim Rahman though he was able to avenge himself. I just don't think that a rematch would benefit him. He has nothing to gain by it. Everyone scoffs at the heavyweight division. No one has emerged that would catapault Lewis to a higher level so there is no point in coming back and risking jeopardizing the fact that he has at least one win over every opponent he has ever faced.

No Lennox isn't afraid he's smart. He's been retired and he's in his 40's. He retired for a reason. It was all just a rumor in the first place and Lewis cleared that up quickly. There was never going to be a rematch between the 2. Lennox was never afraid of anybody throughout his entire career. If he was gonna come out of retirement he would've. The only problem is, he never was gonnna.
And yea Vitali did give Lennox a hell of a fight and was winning on the scorecards when the fight was stopped. Lennox Lewis - One of the greatest heavyweights since the golden era of heavyweight boxing.

Hell No! Vitali landed some good shots early in the fight and was doing pretty good, but it was obvious that Lennox was coming on and started to get the better of him as the rounds progressed. Lennox was tagging him with solid shots and Vitali was beginning to wear down as the fight went on, plus let's not forget that Vitali was cut badly, and how did he get that cut? From the punishment that Lennox was putting on him! That cut is the best thing that could've happened to Vitali in that fight because i'm certain that Lennox would've knocked him out in the next few rounds and we wouldn't even be discussing this right now. All the Vitali fans kill me, they hang their hat on the fact that Vitali was ahead when the fight was stopped, but the fight was scheduled for 12 rounds, and the way Lennox started to land on him, he would've never made it to all 12. Watch the fight again and tell me any different. Lennox kills him in a re-match!

Forty is old for anyone, but for a championship level boxer forty is ancient. Your body lets you know when it is time to slow down, and Lewis has been away from the sport for a awhile now. I don't think he is afraid of anyone, but the effort to regain lost conditioning would be as big an obstacle as Klitscho. I would say the money would have to be large for Lennox to come out of retirement.
If it happened, odds are Lennox would most likely take Vitali again, without the war the second time around. When he chose to, Lewis could box defensively about as well as any heavyweight in history.

I believe that he was tired of training and wanted to ride off into the sunset with a win over all the best fighters of his time. Lennox is a great champion who never ducked anybody. But i think he knows he was losing that fight before the stoppage but once he said he was going to take Vitali deep where he had never been before. I think it was stopped in 6....there was a lot of fight left for Lennox to come back but he got the freaky cut and and got the win.
PS Lennox would have beat ALI

I don't think he was afraid, i think Lennox was just ready to call it a career. He was pushing 40 and he had been fighting for years, and his body was letting him know that it was time. I personally would have loved for him to fight Vitali again because i think given the proper time to train, Lennox would've beaten him in a rematch. Not to take anything away from Vitali, who fought a good and spirited fight and was leading when the fight was stopped, but Lennox had taken Vitali's best and was starting to overtake him when it was called because of the cut. And remember, Lennox took the Vitali fight on two weeks notice after the fight with Kirk Johnson fell through, so he was training for a much shorter fighter with a totally different style. If Lennox had the proper time to prepare for Vitali, i think he would've stopped him early in the rematch.

Klitschko is one of the few recent heavyweights who gave Lewis a tough fight. If Lewis isn't at least wary about a rematch with Vitali, he's not as smart as most give him credit for.

omg... that fight was ridiculous...lewis got lucky when he busted open klitschkos eye, it was obvious to all viewers then that klitschko was still able to fight when he almost knocked lewis out. however lewis had more money and ties with officials and the fight was brought to an unnecessary end. if the fight had continued lennox lewis would have gotten knocked clean out. and the only reason he retired after this fight is so he could retire as champion...in other words he was scared deeply of vitali klitschko

No way Lennox Lewis is one of the few heavyweight champions who ducked no one. The only big name heavyweight of his generation he didn't fight was Riddick Bowe, who clearly didn't want to fight him. In his fight with Klithsko he didnt fight well and he knew it wasent an off night just that he was slowly on the slide. It happens to all boxers no matter how good they are and at 40 years old he was a bit overdue retiring if anything.

Lewis is retired. He got nothing to prove against Vitali. It's funny but it seems that over time some people are of the opinion that Vitali's eye got lacerated all by itself.
