A close friend of mine just went back into rehab for alcohol abuse. He's been struggling with this problem for years. When he got out of rehab last time he drank every day (about 4 standard drinks) but this was a lot less than before rehab. This time when he gets out - I think he should not be drinking AT ALL. If he continues to drink - is he still addicted? Is he capable of just having 'one' social drink or is the temptation too much?

An alcoholic can never drink again. As someone else said one is too many and a thousand is never enough. When you are an alcoholic, even with periods of abstinence, you will end up back where you were before and often much worse. Once you are addicted you are always addicted. Sorry to hear that your friend is an alcoholic but treatment is the best for him. He will get better especially with your support. Look up AA groups in your area, if you are really a friend you could look into Al-Anon, it's for friends and families and can be very helpful.

No. Alcoholics can NEVER drink alcohol again. There is a saying, "If you hang around the barber shop long enough, you will get a haircut." Meaning...even if he starts out at few drinks once in a while, it will be NO TIME before he is no longer able to control it at all. He'll be lucky if he makes it back to rehab and doesn't die. And your friend knows this. Once they sober up, so many think they can control it the next time. It's impossible. No one has ever been able to do it. Sounds to me as though he's been through this many times before. Until he accepts that he's an alcoholic and gets help (AA), he will continue to do it. You might want to consider going to Al-Anon. It's for the friends and family of alcoholics.

A social drink won't hurt him at all as long as it doesn't contain alcohol. What is wrong with water? If you ask, every bar I have ever been to sells it and you don't need to worry then. You don't get healed from being an alcoholic. You are only in recovery. Once an alcoholic, always an alcoholic. It's like AIDS only you can't transmit it to someone else. You can be in remission or you can be active, depends on your choices.

NO! I am a recovering alcoholic. One drink releases the phenomenom of craving in the body. Then you have no control over how much you drink. It has to do with the enzymes in the liver--it doesn't break down the alcohol quick enough-- as in normal drinkers.
Therefore, one drink is too much, hence a million drinks is not enough.

No.... Most (a huge number of them, athough there is the exception) Alcoholics that drink after being sober will only develope a thurst just like before...just as a drug addict can not take thier drug of choice ever again without becoming addicted to it again.

No, Recovering alcoholics can never drink again- never. Nothing. His rehab was a total failure if he drank as soon as he got out.

You are right. An Alcoholic can NEVER drink. There is no such thing as "one social drink" for an alcoholic ever. They also have to be careful with any drug that can be addicting as they can easily become addicted to any substance, sleeping pills, tranquilizers, pain killers, as well as illegal drugs.

No, alcoholics can not have just one drink. That one drink will continue to another then another and so on. He is very addicted and should never have one.

They say the only "cure" for alcoholics is to NEVER drink again, although there is no cure really. That's the best way to prevent a relapse from occuring....to never drink again.
