first thing to remember about dogs, is that they use urine as a territorial marker. if you use a product with a strong cover-up smell, a dog will remark the territory to get rid of the perfume.
as previously suggested, white vinegar makes an excellent deodorizer. try drying out the patch with bicarbonate of soda (buy it from the cake ingredient aisle of your local supermarket), then add diluted white vinegar to the area and scrub clean.
never use citrus on dog pee. the reason it gets suggested is for it's cleaning properties, and it's repelling effect on cats. dogs are not affecgted by the smell, and as i said earlier, strong smells such as citrus can cause re-marking of the same area.

Use Baking Soda and scrub gently, from the outside toward the center, with a stiff brush or sponge dipped repeatedly in clean water (test for colorfastness!). Blot up the moisture with paper towels. Leave a last small layer of baking soda powder sprinkled on the spot and vacuum it later when the carpet is dry. You may have to repeat it a few times, but give it a try.

White vinegar. (And a huge roll of white paper towels) Pour white vinegar over the spot and allow to soak in for a few minutes. Place several paper towels over spot and step, step, step on it. Toss them away and use some more. Now pour warm water over the same area and more paper towel. Step on the spot with clean paper towels until the spot is as close to dry as possible.
