My advice would be to do some research... b/c none of us can tell you what specific dog you should get, but my advice would be something that isn't crossed with a Pomeranian b/c they will yap & shred! But, do get something that is crossed with a Bichon Frise or a poodle b/c they do not shed as often as normal dogs. The good thing about poodles is that they come in any size, so you could something as small as a Doxiepoo (Dachshund/Poodle) to something as big as a Saint Berdoodle for your enjoyment. The thing is, is that they bigger the dog the less YAPping- but a bigger BARK. If you want to control your dog easier then get something crossed with a mini poodle (or something obedient).. but mutts still seem like they are the best in these situations (and a great first dog).
Also, if at possible, buy a dog from a shelter and save a life!!!
They are usually half-trained and they are way less expensive!!!
Hope I helped!

I just got my first puppy too, and they're really fun. I would advise a Yorkie because they love to be near you, quite smart and don't shed fur. As for yapping, my Yorkie only barks when she's happy to see strangers. All dogs have different personalities, some are calm, too jumpy, or have split personalities like mine. It all depends on how you treat it too. But make sure you don't get a too small dog 'cause then their body and bones are really delicate and fragile. Make sure you spend a lot of time with it, especially for the first few months so you can teach it while its still young. Hope everything works out and good luck!!!

If you don't want a dog that sheds, it's best if you get a dog with a shorter coat-as for yapping and being calm that's completely up to the dog's own personality. When my family was going through this same thing we looked a several different dogs at the shelter. But, we soon found out was it was us that was choosing the dog, the dogs were choosing us. We saw several possibilities before meeting our current dog, they were all cute and really nice dogs in their own right but when she got in the room with the whole family she just perked right up and got attention from all of us until we knew she was going to be a member of the family. If you spend a bit of time with each of the dogs that you're looking at the right dog for you is going to choose you. Trust me, you'll know when the dog has picked you.

I would get a female toy poodle or a minature Shitz Tsu. But if you want to be sure, get a book from Borders about all species of dogs. In this book you will find small breeds that are calm and loving and do not shed. Also write to the American Kennel Club, or AKC.com. Write them an email asking what kind of dog would they recommend for you.

Get a Chihuahua. I have a 14 year old sister who is completely obsessed with her dog. Personally I think it's unatural, but hey, the dog is cute... plus they're small and easy to take care of. Oh and they don't shed as much as big dogs.....yapping.......all dogs yap........

If you want a playful and sweet dog I would suggest toy poodle, Cavalier king Charles Spaniel or Norwich terrier, but Shih Tzu, Maltese and Chihuahua are very popular small dogs that look beautiful too. The last three are more calm especially Chihuahua.

Dont go small. Small dogs are often harder to care for than larger ones. And remember the commitment that comes with small dogs, they can live to be 15 plus years. I prefer bigger dogs I have 2 German Shepherds and they are the greatest. Get one of them.

that is so awesome! im 13 too, and i have a golden retriever. they are the best kind of dog, but since you want a small dog, i would go with a cute and lovable Basset Hound, or maybe one of the Dachshunds. A chihuahua or a Papillon or a Pug would also be a great choice. have fun picking out your new dog, and have a wonderful time spending long hours playing and taking care of him/her!

Try looking into your local animal rescue groups. Some of these animals may be more work, but sharing your home and love with an abused/neglected dog is one of the most rewarding experiences. And you can get fabulous dogs that way! I have seen tons of wonderful dogs, that are really great with children and teens come off the streets and out of shelters.
