I have actually been very lucky and have never contracted "the flu". What people commonly think of as "the flu" is actually gastroenteritis. This causes stomach symptoms (vomiting, diarrhea, etc.). True influenza is a respiratory illness and symptoms include a cough, fever, fatigue, muscle aches, weakness, headache and sometimes a sore throat and stuffy nose. It can last from one to two weeks with fatigue, weakness and achiness lasting an additional two weeks after the other symptoms have resolved. Overall, it's a pretty nasty disease, and my patients with influenza are often the most miserable patients I have seen.
