RANGERS.

First of all a marine regiment has all the support i.e. tanks and other heavy weaponry. The ranger regiment is light infantry regiment so they only have lightly armored vehicles that wouldn't stand up to heavy armor.

What I think your asking is would a squad of Marines beat a squad of Rangers; man vs. man. The answer to this is Rangers would win. They go through the toughest training. If your talking Marine Recon (which I don't think you are) I still think, depending on who was in each respective squad, the Rangers would win. Even SEALs and other special operations unit say Ranger training is some of the toughest training in the military.

Marines are some tough son of ******s but the wash out rate for Rangers is way higher than for regular Marine Infantry. No disrespect for Marines but Rangers are Special Operations, meaning the men in there are the best of the best.

By the way some idiot said that Marines get way more combat training than Rangers and that's false. Rangers go through a lot of schools and months of training (different phases). Rangers get 3 or 4 times as much training as Marine infantrymen.

Because they have different missions, the answer could vary, depending on where they fought. Marine Infantry is tough, but Ranger batallions are made up of the best infantrymen in the Army.

First of all, I hope everyone realizes that there is only ONE Ranger Regiment. That being the 75th Ranger Regiment. There are no more Ranger Regiments beyond that.

Second, it is evident that most people have no idea what Army Rangers are, what they do, and the type of training they have to go through in order to become one.

"The 75th Ranger Regiment is a lethal, agile and flexible force, capable of executing a myriad of complex, joint special operations missions in support of U.S. policy and objectives. Today’s Ranger Regiment is the Army’s premier raid force. Each of the three geographically dispersed Ranger battalions are always combat ready, mentally and physically tough and prepared to fight the Long War. Their capabilities include air assault and direct action raids seizing key terrain such as airfields, destroying strategic facilities, and capturing or killing enemies of the Nation. Rangers are capable of conducting squad through regimental size operations using a variety of infiltration techniques including airborne, air assault and ground platforms."

Keep in mind that going to Ranger school is one thing, and being in Regiment is another. If you pass Ranger school, you earn the Ranger Tab. If you pass the school and are selected best among your peers to serve in the 75th Ranger Regiment, you wear the Ranger scroll. "The tab is a school, and the scroll is a way of life."

Taffyandewok, Blacksabbath7118, and Katie... you do realize that in order to be a Ranger in the 75th Ranger Regiment, you have to first graduate Army Basic training and AIT. You then have to graduate US Army Airborne School, a three week course culminating in performing 5 jumps out of an aircraft, earning your Paratrooper wings. You then go to the Ranger Indoctrination Program (RIP). RIP is a 4 week long assessment to help prepare and screen incoming Soldiers to ensure they are ready to join Regiment. After that you finally get into Regiment, but in order to stay you need to graduate Ranger school itself. Ranger school being an intense 61 day long school. All of this does not include the training that will be performed daily in the unit itself. This is far more training a US Marine will have.

So for all those that think that US Marines are more trained than the 75th Ranger Regiment, you are sadly mistaken. Please refrain from throwing out opinions that are unfounded and have no basis in reality.

well i think that depends on what type of marines are they force recon or are they JAG it makes a big difference and there's other details that would change the outcome but id say its a pretty even match and i say that because not everybody in the ranger regiment has been through ranger school some are almost straight out of basic training now if it was Green Berets or Delta sorry marines lose

If we are looking at an average Marine Regiment versus an average Ranger Regiment then the answer is that the Marines will win the engagement. No, it is not because the Marines are tougher or better trained or just plain don't wear those silly, girlie-hats. Ok, settle down - it was just a joke. It actually comes down to equipment. Look at the TOE for a Marine Regiment and you will see that it is a true CAG (combined air-ground) force incorporating armor (including heavy and light armor), artillery (again both heavy and light), infantry (both standard and specialist units like Recon), intelligence, and aviation (both slow AND fast movers) into a single operational command. The Rangers are essentially infantry with some light armor support. The Army is a lot bigger then the Corps and they structure their forces differently. They can afford to have entire regiments of just armor or just infantry and piece-meal out units from differing commands in mission specific operational structures. The advantage is that you can tailor your "force" to a specific set of mission parameters instead of trying to be good at everything. The disadvantage is that the lack of familiarity among differing units with divergent commands can hamper effectiveness. For the Marines, who are already good at everything anyway, it is better to have a command that knows how all of its constituent parts work and everybody shooting the same direction at the same time. Even if you assume the same number of men, you still end up with a much more complete package with the Marines then you get with the Rangers. This means more effectiveness in a broader scope of operational situations.

Perhaps what you really mean is who would win in a battle between the same number (however many it might be from company to battalion strength) of army Rangers and Marine Infantry. Then the answer is simple. The Marines will edge out the rangers. Both units are tough and it would be a bloody, brutal fight. As you get into larger and larger unit sizes then the Marine Corps doctrine of combining different types of war fighters into an organic whole (armor, infantry, artillery, and aviation) is going to stomp more "limited troop type" units like Rangers. I don't care how manly your little French hat makes you feel getting pounded by coordinated artillery, aviation, armor, and infantry all at the same time is just going to flat out ruin your day.

PS - before I start getting any hate-mail I actually have a lot of respect for the Rangers and if I yank their chain from time to time it is a sign of respect and camaraderie. They may not be Marines but they are still brothers in arms. And silly hats.

If this were to happen all you'd end up with is a pile of drunken troops with black eyes reaking of whiskey and copenhagen rounding off the evening with sprint and push up contest's at least 10 men would get their arms broken in arm bars. 3 marines would be bitten by the ranger regiment's mascot sargeant major the one eyed german shepherd but by first light would share their MRE beef jerkey with him. Both regiments would talk of their victory in retrospect for the rest of time.

Marines! Army Rangers and Marines are both fit and traine don land, but the Marines are capable of fighting on the water as well. Also, the sea provides a strategic advantage as well as a possible escape route.
