It means to copy someone else. Most often it's used by adults in front of small children as a kind of "code" to remind the other grownups to avoid swearing and to behave appropriately. Nearby little ones who don't even seem to be listening will "pick up" and mimic the older persons words or actions.

it pertains to a lack of imagination. instead of thinking...act like the crowd...right or wrong. it's a sad state and all too common these days.
