Hi Frank,
For a first date you should keep things very casual and give both you and your date a way to back out if things don't work out. A first date should be a lot like a job interview, you are getting to the know the person a little better in a private situation. Here you can sit down with the person, ask a few questions and think to yourself whether you'd like to make a second date. Hence, I would suggest a coffee date as your first date. If you both work make it during lunch, so that you have enough time to get an idea of the person but you both have to leave to return to work. You certainly don't want to do a very formal first date where you go all out and you find out that you don't like the person very much. You eliminate a great deal of potential discomfort if things don't pan out.
As for your question, there really isn't anything cliche about where you choose to take your date. Just be yourself and try to do fun things with your date - this increases seratonin levels in the brain and will probably influence the likelihood of more dates! Use your common sense and try to think of appropriate places.
Also try to avoid the date 'em and lay 'em mentality. Dates are meant to represent time you choose to spend with a person that could potentially be a partner. Hence, don't ruin things by placing expectations on you getting something back. Have fun spending time with that person, relax and be yourself.

How about a twist on the dinner & a movie cliche? An Indian restaurant, independent art house flick and a funky little coffee house or pub for a nightcap, (ie. stay as far away from national corporate chains as possible.)

dinner and a movie. If you really like the person go do something together. That way you get to know each other. Vs a movie where you don't talk
