Do you or did you validate your children as they got/get older? How did you impact as a parent help your child to transition into the "real" world? How important do you think guiding your children helps them not to fall into the cracks if you will?

Either I or my husband are involved with everything our kids do. I think it is important to be involved...to get to know their friends, teachers, and group leaders (if your not one). We have been coaches, scout leader & volunteers, we have been monitors at concerts & back stage parents at recitals. We have parental controls on our computer and try really hard to limit their use of the internet (although we did just had a myspace confrontation with one child). I read almost every book they have & they are not allowed to watch a movie rated PG anything unless we see it first. We don't own any type of play station. And I do listen to their music...most of which I actullay can say I like. Some say we are overly involved and overly protective although I think our kids have alot more freedom & activities than we ever did. I think being involved is important for every child, to protect them as well as encourage and support them to be the best that they can be. It is important to teach them how to honor their commitments and how to accept failure as well as success. It's important to do as much as you can as often as you can. Your children are only young once and you only get one chance to help them become responsible, independant, strong adults....

I am a hands on my stepdaughter is 12 and i have a niece that is 6 and 4 that i am really close to. As the 12 yr old has gotten older i am constantly trying to show her that things aren't free. If she wants something really bad and we don't have the money she has to use her allowance money for it if she wants it bad enough.
