Can someone tell me where I would need to go and what I would need to take with me to prove that its my vehicle? Also, is it possible to get the title in the same day? Could they issue a temporary copy until the original came in the mail?

Thanks so much!

If you can't find it, you will have to apply for a lost, duplicate title. No, in most states you can't get it the same day, and it will be mailed to you. You will get a receipt for the payment for the duplicate title, but you won't get anything other than that.

Bring the VIN, and the license and decal (if any) numbers with, and they will be able to look it up.

In Indiana just go to your local BMV and request a duplicate title... if you have the VIN or plate number it helps tremendously but is not always necessary.. but you must listed as an owner on the lost title or hold a POA (power of attorney) for the person who owns the vehicle in order to apply for the duplicate.. they will also need to make a photo copy of your drivers license for verification purposes... Duplicate Tite costs $9.00 in Indiana ... Also .. there is the option to apply for a speed title which will help to get the duplicate to you faster for an extra $25.00... Try to remember though that if you had a lien on the title that most lienholders request to hold the title.. and when they release the lien you are required to take the title to the BMV and have it removed from your title.. if you did have a lien you will probably need to go to the lienholder and get a lien release on thier company letter head with the year, make, and VIN of the vehicle stating that they no longer hold any interest on the vehicle.

As long as you have your registration, your DMV will issue you a new title. If you don't have the registration, you will need the VIN number of the car, plate number, a photo ID, and something to prove your address, like a utility bill. They will charge you a nominal fee, and the title will come in the mail. There is no way to expedite it in most states.

in ohio u just go to the dmv and order a copy for six bucks. i assume it is the same in most states. unless u are selling the car, u can be without a title. u do not need to prove it is your vehicle as title has your name on it and your address. it will be sent to same.
