A year ago I was diagnosed with EBV and two years ago had mono.

I have been exhausted the past 3 months and 4 days ago had a bad sore throat and saw white dots on my tonsils. I went to the doctor and they gave me an antibiodic used for strep.

However, two new white dots have appeared on my tonsil and today is the last day of my antibiodic. I still feel achey and slightly feverish. Is this normal for strep throat or could I possibly be experiencing mono for a second time? I'm worried about it being mono...

How can you tell the difference between mono and strep? Can you get mono more than once?

Any insight or personal experience would be appreciated.

Get it checked out! You may have a severe case of strep that wasn't treated by the first round. I would be very surprised if it is mono; mono is much like chicken pox in that if you've had it once, you will almost never get it again. Are your lymph nodes all swollen? That's a classic sign of mono that doesn't always go with strep throat.

In any event, sounds like you need more meds, assuming it isn't mono. Definitely get a strep check asap - strep can turn much, much more serious if you dont' treat it.

I too had the same problem when I was in college. I had found out I had mono by going in and getting treated for strep. I remember the doctor telling me that there are viruses that can also be just like strep. Go back to the doctor. It could be you just need a different antibiotic too. I am not sure about Mono coming back but I think it is one of those viruses that you will alwasy have in your system.

EBV stays in the body, and can be activated again. "Strep" is a bacterial infection, "mono" is a viral infection. 'Could be that the "strep" stressed your system enough to activate the "mono". Go to webMD.com and type in "Mononucleosis" and then go back to the doctor. You really should be feeling better by now.
