You can go to your bank, but they charge you the shipping fee from FedEx.
Besides that, I suggest that any major city has exchange booths.
...Or get traveler's cheques.
They charged me $5.00 each time I used the ATM in Europe to withdraw money. So if you want to do the ATM thing, take out a whole chunk of money once, so that you don't have to pay for it again.

Don't *exchange* money - use an ATM in Europe to withdraw Euros from your American account once you've arrived. You'll get the best rate and ATMs are all over the place - more so there than in the US. When you exchange money, you have to pay a fee on top of the poor exchange rate - ATMs allow you a better rate with a tiny fee (a couple of bucks per transaction). This way, you don't have to wait for a bank to open or find one. You can also avoid having to carry large sums of cash around with you - just get about 100 euros and that should last you at least a few days.

I've gotten money orders in foreign currency from AAA. Also, some banks in major cities have currency exchange.

Another idea is to wait till you're in Europe and withdraw it from an ATM. That's the best exchange rate.

Most offices of major international banks will do it. Just find one in the city you're in.
