Never did...Jehovah, was and is just one of many Gods, the old testament itself says that. Remember, "Thou shalt have no other Gods before me"...has to be other Gods for that statement to make sense.

-This name is thought to have originated as follows:
YAHWEH is the Scriptural (Hebrew) name for the Creator. G-D is the Modern English name for Deity. Are they the same being? Maybe, but then, maybe not -- you decide. However, the Modern English word G-D derives from the Ancient Canaanite word GAWD (the exact same pronunciation).
However, how does that tell Christians that they are not referring to the God of the Bible or Yahweh. He, God, Yahweh, or whatever, is not so nit-picky. I'm sure that many different languages refer to the God of the Bible by many different makes, but what difference does it really make if they and everyone else know Who they are referring to?

One can make anyone or anything their god. Some people make the "Hebrew deity" their God. Many of the names of God, or the titles of God where used as gods by the pagans, probably because they did not understand who and what God is exactly, which in turn was probably because they, or whoever taught them their religion, did not fully accept who and what God is. Nevertheless, the true God is the God of Abraham, and of Isaac, and of Jacob.

In the eyes of observant Jews, the name YHWH is more sacred than the word "elohim" (god) and the 7th commandment says "You shall not make wrongful use of the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not acquit anyone who misuses his name", so "God" is the preferable name.
In Hebrew, common terms are "hashem" (=the name), "adonay" (=my lord) and "elokim" (a deliberate typo of the word elohim).

Who are you talking to? And why do you care what other people say? What if they were referring to some other god?

That 'Hebrew deity', is also the Father and God of Jesus Christ.
Joh 20:17 Jesus said to her, "Do not cling to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to my brothers and say to them, 'I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.'"
By the way, the english pronoucement of the Tetragrammation is Jehovah.
Yahweh is the Jewish pronouncment which they refuse to use.
