Tell them to shut up and work out or get the hell out of the gym.

Are they just sitting and talking while taking up the machine, or using it while talking? I don't make it a habit, but I have used my cell phone while using the treadmill - it helps pass the time. The rudeness factor depends on which situation it is. If a person is being productive and actually using the machine, how is it different from them talking to a workout buddy while working out? Otherwise, yes it is rude if they are just sitting and taking up space without being productive. I agree that it's OK to politely ask to use the machine - usually people will have no problem with moving.

SUPER RUDE... Probably doesn't remove the phone to drive a car either. I guess in general, it should be considered rude to remain on the phone whenever you are in a position that your talking would delay others, create a safety hazard, in a restaurant and when paying a cashier. Your time is important as is everyone else's, you don't pay a membership fee to wait for someone to finish talking on the phone, keeping your from your workout routine and engagements after your exercise. I agree... consult the management.

So long as they aren't in the way or they're doing an exercise where they can talk on the phone at the same time they're exercising, such as ab workouts or leg press or things like that, it is fine. Otherwise, I would say to speak to the manager because that is definitely rude and not needed in a gym setting.

I don't believe it's proper. If they are using a hands-free set and actually working out while they are on the phone, then maybe... and it's a very very unlikely maybe... it might be okay. After all, if the person on the other line were working out with them and they were talking you wouldn't feel this way. But it is not polite if they are tying up the machine and not working out.

Yeah, that's kinda rude. If you're waiting for the equipment, look at your watch, clear your throat, etc. and perhaps they'll take the hint. If they're that engaged in their conversation, consult the manager.

RUDE--our gym doesn't allow it, if they see someone on the phone they'll ask them to step outside or turn it off. I would bring it with management if it's a big problem.

Not really. If someone is doing that politely ask them if you can use the machine they are taking up.
