They have dyes just for that that actually has the bleaching agent built in. It's called Color Rays and I think Revlon makes it.

I'm not a hair expert but I speak from experience. I have really dark hair and I wanted to dye it red. I tried it without bleaching first. The effect was really nice but really subtle too. You would only see it if you're under the sun or florescent lighting. I also bleached my hair..that didn't turn out so well. It became a nice fiery red, but after some time I noticed that my hair got a lot thinner. The regrowth was much thicker than the part that I bleached. I had to grow out my hair and cut it just to get rid of the part that got chemically burned. So if you want to go that direction, it's not so bad. But I would really suggest you consult a hair specialist before you do. Better yet, get it done professionally.

Very few colors lift color. There is a new color rage by wella called magma. It is single process meaning it lifts and colors at the same time. You have to get it at a beauty supply store so you would need a liscense, but you could call around salons in your area and ask if they do single process over color, or specifically if they use magma by wella. I hear it also is non-amonnia and won't fade or damage hair at all. Good luck. See link below.

I have recently dyed my hair onyx with blood red tips. My hair was a dirty blond shade then i dyed it maroon twice the chilled plume once, so then it was a medium brown color. I didn't have to strip it or anything, not even bleach it.

i have done this before if you want it to be red than strip it. but it looks really cool with the red over black, it really shows up in the sun.

if you ask your stylist for s lightening then it should work. but enhancing your natural color just with more red is what they would do. all it would be would be a lightening of your under hair. not really a dye.
