Well, the best thing that you can do right now is research, research, research. You can start by going to www.dogbreedinfo.com. This website is great, because it has lots of different breeds and a lot of information, as well as breeders and rescues.
Don't make the same mistake I did! My parents said that I could have a dog as long as it was small. I didn't do enough research, and we ended up having to give the dog away becuase it was just too hyper! If I had researched the breed (papillion) I would have found out that papillions are herding dogs that need alot of excercise and training!
Try having your parents take you to the local animal shelter, and see what is available. Rescues are the best kinds of dogs, because they will give you unconditional love for saving them and turning their lives around. Also, I think that mutts are unique and beautiful. With mutts, you know that you will never see a dog quite like yours! If you adopt your dog, then you could get an older dog that is mature and past the puppy stage, or you could get a younger more energetic dog. The possibilities are endless! You might have to wait until something is available that suits your needs, but you will always find something if you look hard enough!
Check out this website, www.petfinder.com, because on it, you can find many animal shelters near you and the dogs that they have available for adoption. You could find purebreds, mixes, small dogs, little dogs, and just about everything.
Good luck!

Lots of little dogs are yappy. Some little breeds are very nervous. If you are going to keep this pet indoors, then being a mom of a young teen myself, I would recommend a dog that doesn't shed or smell like a dog. We have 3 little poodles. They are very smart, very affectionate, do not shed, do not smell, and usually are mild tempered. You might research different breeds, some breeds are more aggressive than others. My vote is always for the Poodle!
We have a teacup poodle that only weighs 3 pounds and he is full grown, and he is the sweetest little guy. I know you will pick just the right puppy for yourself! Enjoy! And don't forget, dogs need daily care, feeding, walking, fresh water, attention. You can't just ignore it one day because you are busy with your friends etc. Oops, I will stop, I am sounding like a mom now!

Go to purina.com and go to the breed referral. Although Purina food sucks this referral is really great.
Then go to petfinder.com and adopt the breed....or AKC.org and go to the breeder referral page.
This way you are more likely to find a good match and a healthy dog....sold not for profit.
Also don't go for imperials or toys as these dogs are usually not quality and probably will have many health problems. If a breeder you like sells imperials or teacups normally....DO NOT BUY FROM THERE! Having one labled teacup or imperial....but both parents being normal sized...well its just a runt and will not have all that many health problems (teacups are usually bred from two other runts)

Lara,
I have a toy poodle. There are three breeds of poodles; Toys (small), Minature (medium), Standerd (large). Yorkies are also a good choice but they are very yappy and full of energy. Also try shitzue. My friend has one and he is really big though. Chiwahwas are a good choice to if you would like to have a very energetic dog. Maltese are very good too. Go to www.puppyfind.com to look. Also www.puppiesposted.com has a lot of small dog breeds. That's where I got my dog. That site isn't very pricey either. Good luck getting your new dog!

make sure you get a dog from a shelter or rescue, or LEGITIMATE breeder (check akc.org for a list).
to find a shelter dog in your area go to www.petfinder.org or type in the breed of dog you decide and "rescue" in google. you can find so many purebreds there.
Try this quiz to see what breed is best for you, and use the other info on the page to check out a breed before you decide:
http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/search.htm
Remember a little mixed breed puppy is just as fun as a purebred, and you will have a good story to tell when people ask where you got him from!

Yorkies like to bark - a lot.
A toy breed I like are Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. They don't bark much and love to cuddle. They love people.
I also like pugs and they don't tend to bark much.

don't get a Yorkie, they are very yappy. I have a Miniature American Eskimo. She is very cute, and looks like a husky only completely white, and less than half the size.

A miniature dashound(shorthaired) would make you a great pet. They are small, inexpensive to care for, very loving, and always want to cuddle. The only thing is that they need teeth cleanings after a few years to ensure proper health. I have one and we love her a lot.

Yorkies are cute, but I personally like pomeranians and dachshunds. They are small, pointy nosed dogs, and they both look adorable as puppies ans they still look cute as adults. Cute cudly, dogs.
