If this really bothers you, call the parents and ask if a gift card might be appropriate. Maybe you could donate the money you would have spent on a gift to places like your local zoo, Ronald McDonald house, the ASPCA or other animal shelter. You could make the donation in the birthday child's name. You are not obligated to include that information in the card, but if there are "neat" pictures that the birthday child might enjoy you might want to include it.

I think they sincerely mean that they do not want gifts. Bringing a gift would make someone that didn't bring a gift uncomfortable. If you feel really funny about coming empty handed bring some food! Can't go wrong there! Or just bring them an empty card to let them know you wish them all the best!

Oh, I can top you - we were invited to a 4 year old b-day party, told not to bring gifts, instead bring a donation for their local humane shelter, and had a "registry" of ideas from Petco! I felt like a jerk going to a 4 year olds party and bringing a leash and dogfood... but figured thats what they want, so did it. I would just bring a card and go.

bring yourselves and a nice bday card. sometime during the course of the bday party offer to repay by inviting to take the child to chuck e cheese the next time you go. In repayment for showing you a good time at the bday party.
but dont bring a material present, if they said not to bring any.

I did the same thing for my son's 3rd birthday...he already had all the toys books etc. he needed...any more gifts would have been extraneous.

If you do feel odd not bringing anything, contact the parents and ask if you can bring any food/drink to share. That I found was the most helpful for our party.

My son has EVERYTHING and I would also prefer that people not bring gifts. I suggest giving a savings bond or nothing at all (as requested). It gets overwhelming trying to figure out how to store all of the toys they never play with or play with for a short period of time.

Why don't you donate to a charity in the birthday child's name. Then just give them a card with the info about the donation in it.

Sounds like the family has requested no gifts. I would honor that.

If you really want to get him something, send something in the mail and let it arrive after the party.
