The prognosis of West Nile virus is directly related to the severity of the illness and the age of the person with the infection.

* Those with mild infection recover fully with no permanent disability.

* Death occurs in 12% of people with West Nile encephalitis. The elderly are most at risk for death. Younger people recover much more quickly and are much less likely to show signs and symptoms of severe illness. In the New York outbreak, most cases occurred in people 50 years and older.

From what I've heard it's all yellow journalism about it. It appearantly only kills those with immune deficiency(like the elderly) and doesn't show any effect in most people. Though appearantly you can be genetically predisposed to getting it worse. It is a virus though, so once you get it and are fine again you cannot catch it again. Also I doubt that if you go in to the doctor with it that you'd die.

The problem is more about when it started spreading over North America(around 1999), and people freaked out. As far as I understand it though it's no worse than the flu.
