Schizophrenia can be well-managed with medication, however at this time, there is no "cure." Learning to cultivate a less stressful, more structured, and emotionally supported lifestyle are all effective ways of enhancing the benefits of medication, yet none of these approaches can take the place of psycho-pharmaceuticals. The vast majority of individuals with this illness require medication to remain out of the hospital in the long run. Many factors go into determining prognosis, however age of onset, awareness of ones illness, social supports, and medication compliance all figure in significantly. Since many individuals with Schizophrenia also develop Clinical Depression, it is vitally important that both medication and some form of therapeutic support be considered integral to managing ones mental illness.

As a therapist who often works with individuals and families where Schizophrenia is present, I strongly suggest picking up a copy of "Surviving Schizophrenia," by E. Fuller Torrey, M.D., whose own sister lived with Schizophrenia for over 25 years. It is without question the most informative, up-to-date, and easy to read book of its genre. It includes a wealth of current information on the pros and cons of specific medications and therapeutic treatments. And most importantly, it dispels a great many myths and misconceptions about the diagnosis, while providing a lot of concrete information about available services and other related resources. I have found it to be an invaluable reference for both clients and clinicians alike. Knowledge is power!

Schizophrenia cannot be cured but it can be managed. It is a condition that is always present. You can't get rid of it like you can some illnesses. A third of all schizophrenics have to be permanently hospitalized because even with medication the illness is out of control. The rest of the schizophrenics can manage their life and illness with help from doctors, medications, family, and learning to live daily with the symptoms.

Not everyone has the same symptoms and not everyone takes the same medications. It all depends on you genetically. There are also some other disorders that come with this illness. Polydipsia is a disorder where you have excessive thirst. The thirst can be mild or it can get to the point that you always are drinking water. This disorder is caused either by the medication or the illness or a little of both.

You have to be careful with this because you can drink too much liquids and throw your electrolytes in your body off and drown yourself. If you are the one with schizophrenia, it is not as bleak as you think. You can have a good life and you can have loving people in your life, you just need to learn how to manage it. You can do this by contacting your local mental health and asking about local support groups for you and your family.

No, not really. In my experience, it can't really be "cured" with medication either. Some of the symptoms can be treated.

In the interview Dr. Richardson told of her own study in which a young schizophrenic patient, who refused conventional medication, was practically symptom free after only 2 months of taking Omega 3 supplements. Both doctors agreed that this was 'quite remarkable'.
