When I was looking for a gym, I went and checked out every gym accessible to me and found the one that seemed to have a healthy blend of all body types, as well as the equipment and services I was looking for. When I checked out some of the other places, walking in there I just felt like I didn't belong, so I left.

It's probably that the fat people have become thin people and the others have quit. Perhaps other heavy people lost weight before they started going to the gym.
If the fit people ridiculed the fat people most would probably quit than stick it out unfortunately.Gyms would rather turn a blind eye to this type of harassment than lose the "fit" customers, who'd be more likely to be regulars. Might be an answer to have different types of gyms cater to different people.

people who are overweight often feel embarrased or inadequate in a gym setting. But the ones who do manage to get past that usually end up looking athletic if they stick to a suitable program. You will find that exercising makes you feel good and you will stop worrying about being bigger, thats when the weight will start to fall away. often being overweight is not only about how much food we eat or exercise we take, but an emotional issue where you are holding onto some emotions from the past which maifest in our bodies as injuries, illnesses or fat. Identify these issues and work on them to let it go and it will help to get rid of that unwanted fat.

People who are big are probably too scared or not bold enough to say "I don't care" to hang out in Gyms....also the thin people know they have to work on it to stay that way.
It important to know why you want to be fit...do it for yourself, your health and forget or try not to think about the silly "ideal".
Good question...I was the worst at keeping up (not the fattest) but the most uncoordinated with poor stamina.

They are most likely ashamed or they are just not aware of the benefits of going to a gym. I do acknowledge your low sight rate of heavier weights in a gym. Most prefer to stay around their house and eat however. Their exercises consist of 16 oz curls, wrist exercises, changing the channel, and calling their wife for another beer.

I think it's definitely a combination of both laziness/lack of motivation and intimidation or fear. You might seem to notice more fit people..because they actually do go to the gym to get fit! they are motivated to stay fit after becoming fit. People who are not fit may be afraid to go to the gym because they are afraid of embarassment/ridicule and are therefore not comfortable being surrounded by fit people. It might even make them sad because they might start comparing themselves to others..but people who are fat or not fit and go to the gym have a positive mentality to get fit..Their focus is not on others, but rather themselves.

I think JohnS hit the nail on the head.... people in general are self conscious of their appearance, and in turn this effects their confidence level.... Instead of saying "I can" they start finding ways to avoid situations that they might not feel confident or in control of. One's confidence is a MAJOR part of their health whether they realize that or not.... people who go to the gym in my experience are not there to scoff at people who are there legitimately trying to exercise and improve their health, granted there are maybe one or two people who are a little too "intense" while training, but at least we can take solace in the fact that their testicles will fall off by age 36.

well.... y do u think the fat ppl r fat?
most simply hate the gym and choose to do little rigorous physical activity.
the thinner ppl usually go to stay in shape, not to get in shape.
