Try Open Office, this is a better, free alternative to Microsoft Office (which is not free). It has a great spreadsheet program, which is even more powerful than Excel.

There are occasionally rare promotional events in which Microsoft would offer copies of Office (which contains Excel) for free. However, you would have to attend the events and follow the requirements.

I seriously recommend that you use the alternative from OpenOffice instead if you just need a free up-to-date program to deal with spreadsheets. It is compatible with files produced with Microsoft Excel.

You can also use Google Documents and Spreadsheets. Here is the URL http://docs.google.com/

Its an entirely web based spreadsheet tool. What ever you create stays on their servers (securely) and you can open it from any other machine anywhere.
