Alexithymia, the inability to put your feelings into words, is thought to be nature/nuture related. In other words, all babies are born with the potential to put their feelings into words but the ability must be developed (nutured). If it is not developed, then alexithymia will result.

So, if a child grows up in a home where she never hears anyone talk of their feelings, the child won't learn to express her feelings.
