There are many ways for bacteria to spread. There are things called "vectors" which is the word used to describe insects that can either bite you (which is called biological transmission) or walk on you (which is called mechanical transmission) and give you bacteria. You can also acquire diseases from water, tables, desks, doorknobs, etc. These are all called "fomites". The term fomite is used to describe an object that is not alive, but that can trasmit bacteria anyway. Then there is normal transmission from a living organism to another living organism. These three types are the only ways to spread bacteria that we know of so far.

From touching an infected object and then passing it to a non infected object. Then it just need to find a means of entering. Generally the rule of thumb is washing your hands to stop the spread.

Direct contact with an infected person or discharge, indirect transfer includes water vapor from the lungs, as when a person sneezes or coughs; contaminated hands and equipment; contaminated food and water; and insects that carry pathogens.

a person goes into the store, pulls the door handle with the hand that he just sneezed on. contaminates the door handle.
you come along touch the same door and get the germs on your hands. later you rub your nose/eyes or bite your nails. anything that person had such as cold, virus, TB, etc. you could possibly get.
never touch door handles, gas pumps. use a knapkin. or your sleeve.

through touching--even like inanimate objects by person A, then person B comes along & touches it.
also thru expulsion of any of our bodily fluids by eye, nose, mouth, genitals, etc.
