They are TASTY!!!!!
Sweetheat, nothing personal but you are in the Hunting section.
Clubbing seals on the head is not "hunting" by most people's definition here....
Face reality: Humans have been killing other animals for food, products and sport for millions of years and are not going to change anytime soon. You have been watching too many Disney cartoons where animals have personalities and humans are bad......in other words you have been brainwashed.

Unfortunately people kill these seals for a living.
I don't know that not eating Canadian seafood really gets the message across though. How does that affect a sealer any more than anyone else?
There's a province called Newfoundland which has continually been a problem economically. It's the guys that live there who are given this opportunity to kill seals for money. They are very defensive, and their provincial government is too. Unfortunately the federal government also supports this cull.
It's totally disgusting, isn't it? No respect for the animals whatsoever. They leave the carcasses their to rot. All they want to do is kill as many as possible, skin them, and sell the fur. Some of these guys even taunt environmental acitivists by throwing dead skinned seals at them. Pretty low.
Most Canadians are against this.
One "good" thing though is that this year a lot of cubs are dying naturally, so at least part of the cull may be called off.

First, newborn seals are not being killed. It's been illegal to kill baby seals, or whitecoats, since 1987. Not that that has stopped PETA, the Sea Shepherds and others of their ilk from using baby seals in their propoganda to influence the weak-minded.
Secondly, Royal Commission on Seals and Sealing in Canada found that clubbing seals, when done properly, is more humane than the killing processes in commercial slaughterhouses.
Thirdly, a 2002 report published in the Canadian Veterinary Journal found that the club or hakapik is an efficient tool designed to kill the animal quickly and humanely ( http://www.pubmedcentral.gov/articlerender.fcgi?
tool=pmcentrez&artid=339547).
Fourthly, sealers in the Magdalen Islands (Gulf of St. Lawrence) and on Quebec's Lower North Shore, where about 25% of the hunt occurs, use both rifles and hakapiks while sealers on the ice floes on the Front (in the waters east of Newfoundland), where 75% of the hunt occurs, primarily use rifles.
The seals are used for leather, oil, handicrafts, and recently meat for human and animal consumption. Seal oil is sold in capsule form as Omega-3 fatty acid.
Sealing can contribute up to 35% of a sealer's tota; annual income. Could you take a 35% cut in pay?
There is an estimated 6.75 million seals on Canada's east coast. No more than 337,000 will be killed in any year ---> this is a highly managed and sustainable hunt.
The seal hunt is a humane, sustainable and economically viable use of a natural resource, and is supported by over 60% of the Canadian public.

I for one am not a seal hunter, if you can call that hunting.
But to tell you the truth, you have been out classed.
There are some women up there this season who protested in a new way.
They laid in the snow stark naked and cover in fake blood for hours in an attempt to mimic a skinned seal ?
All they got was arrested, laugh at and frost bite, as to where was the frost bite I do not know.
I am sorry but your seafood protest wont even get their attention.
I’m not sure it’s the fishermen clubbing the seals, I thank most of them are out fishing.
Plus I would have to guess you don’t eat enough sea food to hurt that industry.
Your going to need the assistance from some very large associates with a healthy appetite.
But to each their own, so do what you must.
But to answer your question no baby seals are protected from the clubbing.
That my opinion

Ok Doll just to help you out.
HIV came about when trouser trout took a swim up the muddy river.
Next you are going to thank Big Foot did it.
But it was an entertaining question you asked before this one.

Good for you. Want a cookie?
The hypocrisy of the anti-hunters in general astound me. You curse the people who kill seals yet you imply you eat seafood by threatening to boycott the Canadian seafood industry.
What makes you think that a fish doesn’t have feelings? You think a shrimp’s life goal is to be boiled and take a dip in some cocktail sauce?
To answer your question, why do people hunt seals?
1. Their meat is a delicacy in most Native tribes of North America.
2. Seal oil is a much sought after product that is used for barter and trade amongst the people of the North, especially Native tribes.
3. Seal fur and pelts are very durable, water resistant, and warm. Not everyone wears Nike and Red Wings. Seal fur and skin is used to make mukluks, other footwear, and for clothing.
I urge you to stop and take a look at your world. You condemn the hunters, yet the hunters are the ones that live closest with nature and tend to live in harmony with nature. Hunters are the people who respect the land and the animals that die to nourish our bodies. They believe in obtaining an untainted food source (God only knows the crap in the domestic meat supply). Due to a lack of natural predators in North America, without hunters, many species would be doomed to mass starvation or disease that would cause the animals to die a slow and painful death.
Take a moment to research where the food on your dinner plate comes from. Beef, pork, and chickens live a miserable existence on corporate farms that care only about profits and not the animals comfort. Shrimping is one of the most wasteful food gathering processes on the planet. Shrimp nets don’t discriminate and everything that isn’t a shrimp usually dies. Even vegetables exploit the poor and the needy. Workers toil for hours and hours in the burning hot sun to harvest your veggies. They suffer from repetitive movement injuries and muscle issues from lifting heavy baskets over and over again.
Take a look at the world around you. A few hunters killing a few seals isn’t what you should be worried about. Corporate farms is what is going to cause catastrophic problems.
In the end, I will never understand your point of view. If it is cute and furry, it is a cause. If it is a cow, it is a baseball glove.
Off to buy some Canadian Walleye Fillets….

hi there, most seals are killed for thier pelts some seals are killed for meat , but that is usually by the eskimo and inuit people, but you also must know , that if the seal population is allowed to become to large then bad things happen to them and to the rest of the world, beacause seals eat fish the fish stocks would dwindle (less food for the people of the world), and with any large population in a small area deases and hunger. it is hard to understand but the canadian goverment is trying to manage the the population of all its animals , to keep them healthy and fed. hope this helps you understand the situation.

This is the hunting section, yet I doubt anyone here has ever hunted seals. Take your protest elsewhere.
EDIT: I looked at your other questions. Do you really think HIV comes from snakes?

MY best guess is for the meat and hides. you imply that you eat 'seafood' as long as it's not of Canadian origin. Something has to die to furnish meat and leather whenever and wherever.I will bet that you have leather shoes and handbags with other animal products in your refrigerator now and that you enjoy hamburgers, so what is the basic difference?
