Dry and/or greasy skin due to poor oil composition of the skin. Thick greasy oils clog pores, lack of oil leads to dryness and irritation. You need thin oils to moisturize while dissolving and clearing gunk in your poors. Try fish oil or seafood. 2 tsp fish oil a day or 4 servings of seafood a week. Stick it out for at least 2 months; it will take a long time to replace all your oil. Any effect after 1-2 days is temporary or random; so even if it makes you break out a little at first, you haven't given it a full try yet.

In the short term you can wash and moisturize well, but that will only go so far. Plus excessive washing can be drying and excessive moisturizing can be clogging. Use a small amount of a light moisturizer, made with oil not jelly or grease. Often that means soybean oil or mineral oil. Mineral oil means mined from the ground. So soybean oil is usually better, though mineral oil won't cause too much harm. Clean with soap and water, not a harsh acne cleanser. Even then they only work so well. So you really need the seafood.

Antibiotics aren't really good for bacteria long term, they'll come back in force after. Short term they may help. After you get off them find some kefir with acidophilus listed first or 2nd to replace the friendly bacteria they destroyed. Studies show less illness when you have these bacteria, even outside the stomach in places such as the lungs and elsewhere. You want friendly bacteria to fill the void when the antibiotics stop, not harmful ones.

In the short term you might also try 100,000+ iu retinol vitamin A (a megadose, and too much for normal use) or one of the acne drugs that is similar to retinol vitamin A. It's some minor harm to your organs, but it helps against bacteria on your skin. At least it doesn't have the other long term drawbacks to your skin that antibiotics and many scrubs do.

If you would like to learn how to treat your acne permanently and regain your health and wellbeing, without drugs, without typical acne treatments, and without any side effects, then this will be the most important letter you will ever read.

You are probably in your teens or early 20s. When I was a teenager all of my friends and I went through a period of having acne. Before I got discharged from the Navy at age 21, the acne was lessened. At age 24, it was gone completely. So how do you interpret this information? I believe it was a period in our lives that just happens when you are going from being a kid to becoming an adult. If science really knew how to stop this, there would be a vaccine for it by now. All this mumbo jumbo about acne on television sounds convincing only to those that have severe outbreaks. Those medicines might lessen the effects, but don't cure.

My dad is a dermatologist(skin doctor)... you might have heard that you should eat healthy to have beautiful skin .... this is somewhat true. Although it is not proven, studies point towards unhealthy eating being a cause of problem skin. Refrain from fatty/oily foods and especially junk food like chocolates, doughnuts etc.
Wash face with a cleanser everynight and if you use a face moisturizer, try to obtain one dermatologically aproved for problem skin (meaning people who suffer from acne).
Try and see a dermatologist if your acne is very bad, most people dont know but there is medication and tablets for acne, and the creams perscribed by dermatologists are much more effective than those commercial ones advertised on TV such as Clearasil(prob mispelled), which are cheap and not very good.

Too much oil in your pores + bacteria (we all have it...no getting around that.)

You need to control the oil and kill off the bacteria. The oil clogs up the pore, the bacteria eats the oil, and everything starts getting inflamed and swollen. I don't know if cystic acne is just bad regular acne, or if it's something different, but I think it's along the same lines.

You know those Proactiv commercials? They totally got it right. Clean, remove oil, put on a moisturizer that calms your skin down. Removing oil makes your skin sensitive and it makes your oil glands flip out and try to protect your skin, which means more and more oil. So if you put on a moisturizer w/no oil, it can calm down your skin and keep it from pumping out a bunch of oil.

I don't know that you have to use Proactiv, but they're certainly on the right track.

Yup, Proactive is really the best solution. I used it when I was a teenager (when acne was at its worst), and it worked. Nothing else did. I think I probably bought every kind of acne medication that was available in the store, but all they did was dry out my face. There are prescription medications, but they usually have side effects. Just get proactive, use it and see the difference.

Acne is basically caused by glands in the skin and is related to hormonal effects. The sebaceous glands secret an excess amount of sebaceous fluid though the pores resulting in the skin being damaged.
The main causes of acne are:

Hormones—especially androgens, hormones that stimulate sebaceous (oil-producing) glands.
Clogged pores from the abnormal shedding of skin cells.
Excess sebum (oil) production from the sebaceous glands.
Bacterial build-up in the sebaceous glands.
**Flare factors: stress, menses, puberty (new onset hormones)
The chocolate thing and all that is a myth apparently.

Acne is caused by the bacteria and oil that builds up in your pores. This causes irritation to your skin and makes it break out. ProActiv really works along with a daily facial scrub like Neutrogena or St. Ives Apricot Scrub! =)

I had a huge problem with acne too, but lately it's been getting way better.

Try drinking lots of water!
Wash your face with super cold water!
And apply aleo vera gel on your face!

It smells real nice and leaves you really fresh. The aleo vera also reduces redness. Plus it's cheap! I get some at avon for 2 bucks. Lasts me a month or more:)
