God is eternal, He dwells in a dimension that is outside of our physical restraint of space-time. We cannot comprehend the eternal realm. It is there that a trinity exists that is beyond our understanding or puny minds can imagine. But Who is the beginning and the end? Isaiah identifies Him as YHWH...

Isa 41:4 Who hath wrought and done it, calling the generations from the beginning? I YHWH, the first, and with the last; I am he.
Isa 48:12 Hearken unto me, O Jacob and Israel, my called; I am he; I am the first, I also am the last.

Who is the First and the Last? It is YHWH and His Redeemer

Isa 44:6 Thus saith the YHWH the King of Israel, and his redeemer the YHWH of hosts; I am the first, and I am the last; and beside me there is no God.

Who is the First and the Last? It is YHWH it is Yeshua, the Redeemer, the Almighty.

Re 1:8 I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.
Re 1:11 Saying, I am Alpha and Omega, the first and the last:
Re 1:17 And when I saw him, I fell at his feet as dead. And he laid his right hand upon me, saying unto me, Fear not; I am the first and the last:
Re 2:8 And unto the angel of the church in Smyrna write; These things saith the first and the last, which was dead, and is alive;
Re 21:6 And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely.
Re 22:13 I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last.

The bible teaches we have an infinite mind, meaning we don't have all the answers.

We were created with a desire in us to yearn for answer especially mortality. Bible also teaches that Jesus concurred death and made it assessable for anyone who believes in him.

The bible teaches that God is the alpha and the omega, the beginning and the ending. This is something we cannot fathom because of our finite understanding.

However there are so many laws and equations in the universe that point to an all knowing being. The bible teaches believing by faith not a blind faith but a faith God builds up through a relationship with him. And when we die we will go into his presence and it should all make sense.

Read the bible and analyse its contents.

We don't know and probably never will understand the concept of being eternal until we ourselves become eternal ourselves.

The question you ask is often asked by a person who does not believe in God because He doesn't make sense. I agree, He doesn't. I do believe in Him however.

This same question could be asked of science regarding when and how the universe got started before the so called "big bang". They give the same answer. "It has always been there".

Either view takes faith in the unknown. I'll put my bet on God.

God is self-existent. You must believe by faith (not facts), that He is who He says He is.

God is the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the End.
If you get to God's Kingdom you can ask all the questions you want because you have eternity to hear His answers.

God hasn't always been, god has never been.

As a thought experiment, if you believe that god has always existed and that he created natural laws then why not just believe that natural laws have always existed and leave out an unnecessary step?

Conversely, if you believe that man is so complex as to require a designer then why does god, who must be infinitely more complex than man not require a designer?

How could God not always be, like he/it were subject to the laws of nature and man? would he/it be an equal rather than a ruler?

Like others have said, it is difficult for us to comprehend. I do not believe this not a problem specific to religion though. Where did the energy for the Big Bang come from? Is the universe (multiverse) infinite? If not then what is beyond it?

Well if you think about it, time always has been and always will be. Another thing is that God created time, so he exists outside of time. Its something we'll never understand entirely.
