A friend of mine says 5/8" x 6" and there's a website (http://freedeckplans.com) that says 2x6. 2x6 are obviously more expensive. Which are actually recommended? The 5/8" x 6" is supposedly decking board? (I'm not sure so I'm asking)

The correct board to use is called 5/4 or 5 quarter x 6" pressure treated lumber. It is the safest and most durable. Just a quick tip for installing, look at the end grain on the board, it will look like a cup, install the board with the cup upside down, as the boards weather the edges won't curl up.

5/8" is pretty thin to be holding very much weight or if you or someone was to jump on it between the supports underneath they might go right through. I would not trust 5/8". I would go with the 2".
