"Feeling sorry for yourself" is actually a form of pride. There are two kinds of "pride" - one is the "I'm so great" form that most people associate with the word "pride", and the other is the "Woe is me" form of pride, or "feeling sorry for yourself". It stems from a belief that you "deserve better". God hates both these forms of pride.
A Christian, rather than feeling sorry for himself, would welcome all setbacks and suffering, saying, "(I am suffering) - Praise the Lord!" and "Thank you, Lord, for considering me worthy to partake in Your suffering."

Everyone is feeling blue sometimes, even faithful Christians. Feeling sorry for oneself after realizing one’s mistake can lead to repentance and effort to do better. However, if the feeling is dominant, it can lead to disaster. In this case the person can seek God’s deliverance, strength, and guidance to pick oneself up and move on. The story of Elijah in 1 King 19 gives a good example.

Well, it is human to want to feel sorry for ourselves when bad things happen to us. By doing so we often get depressed and all our attention is drawn to ourselves. Stop feeling sorry for yourself means to look away from the self and unto others. Look at your blessings instead of your short comings. There is someone else worse off than you. Jesus has endured all the pain and suffering we will endure and He knows exactly what it's like. Yet, He always served others, never Himself. We need to try and follow this example because God knows it will make us feel better.

I guess what is bad is when we grovel in our misery without taking steps to alleviate the misery. That does not solve anything of course, and actually probably increases the misery. So the thing to do, I think, is to be sure that we do not dwell on the things of the past which have caused us suffering, and instead work on solutions. We can realize our shortcomings, and acknowledge that the reason may be some past experience, but we must try to move forward.

I think that when people say that... they may just be mean spirited towards you or whoever...
when you 'feel sorry' for yourself, it means that your focus is inward, on yourself rather than outwards, on Christ and what you can be doing for Him.... sometimes we have to find that one thing that is bringing us Joy and cling to that in the times of sorrow or struggle... but selfpity is very draining on a person, and it can be satan trying to weigh you down so you can be of no use to God in the world while you are thinking only of your circumstances. Change your focus outwards on what others need or what you can do to help others....
