I live in a wooded area, (right next to the woods) and my neighbor has left his trash in his bags for a week now outside. I'm starting to worry that he won't ever take them to the trash bin which are at the front of the apartment complex. I'm worried because I don't want critters to start coming in from the woods which has happened in the past. He is a nice guy, and I see him every day, so I know nothing is wrong with him. I don't want to ruin our "friendship" if you want to call it that. How do I handle this?

Call the city and report it anonymously. You might ask him if he is ill because because of the trash pile up. Smile when you ask.

you say you live in an apartment. i would first try to find a time to pick up the trash when this neighbor is not home. maybe he will take the hint without the embarrassment of a formal complaint. it may or may not solve the problem.
if after you do this, he still places more garbage in the area, i would anonymously complain to the property manager. this will not ruin your friendship, because he will not know who called. also, somewhere in his head he knows that this is not the appropriate place to leave trash. the property manager could have noticed it while inspecting the property.

Talk with this neighbor. Don't use a nasty tone, or anything. Just point out that you are afraid that these trash bags will attract critters to your property. Maybe he will take care of this himself. Or at least give you a reasonable explanation why these bags are there and not in the trash.

If he doesn't take care of things, the next step would be to report it to the nearest officials. Police, or whoever, who could talk with this man.

Maybe try this:

When he's not around take them to the trash bin. Then next time you see him be very charming and say "Oh, by the way, I took your bags to the trash bin for you because I was afraid the woodland critters were going to tear into them and make a mess for you. They've done it before. :o) I hope you don't mind."

Hopefully he won't be offended and instead will realize that he shouldn't leave them laying out.

Other than that, you could call your apartment manager and hope he doesn't mention you when he talks to your neighbor.

Have a good one!

I live in wooded country too and I hate it when people pile their garbage to take it to the dump once a month. Ask him to buy plastic cans to store and stack the garbage because you have raccoons visiting your yard sometimes.

Ask him if he needs help. Help him if he does. If you let them know that the question is coming from a good caring place and not because it's disgusting -- which it is -- they will understand.
