It sparked congressional hearings on corruption in boxing. James is an area fighter who will always have the blogbaba's respect for his accomplishments but this fight was definately one for the ages. What are your comments?

Blogbaba ~

Write about ripping a fighter off. Tiberi beat the bajeebies out of James Toney the whole fight. He pressured James the entire fight. James was a lot smaller back then and this is when him and Jackie Kallen were all nicey nicey. My heart went out to Dave he did everything he had to do to beat Toney with the exception of knocking him out and still got the screws. If I'm not mistaken Alex Wallu said "It was the worst decision he's ever seen" Senator William Roth of Deleware spearheaded the call for an investigation.

Thanks for the question Blogbaba.

I remember that fight well. Toney had struggled to make 160 and was listless in the fight. Tiberi clearly beat him and should've been given the decision. It was one of the worst decisions that i have ever seen. It's fights like that one that really hurt boxing and turn a lot of fans off from watching the sport. Toney eventually moved up to 168 and won the title there and defended it a few times before struggling to make weight again in losing a lopsided decision to Roy Jones. I'm not sure what happened to Tiberi after the Toney debacle, but he should been the Champion after that fight. Horrible decision that made Delaware senator Bill Roth (Delaware was also Tiberi's hometown) complain to congress about corruption in the sport. Boxing needs a national commission very badly to straighten up a lot of this mess because there are still very bad decisions going on as of today.
