First I must say, I have the BEST, SWEETEST, most beautiful kitty in the world. My cat is my life... I will admit every once in a blue moon he does things of which he needs to be punished for. What is the best method everyone has found for punishment? I use a water squirt bottle. That normally works. Does anyone else have other ideas?

I don't think its okay to pop/spat a kitty for punishment. They are different than dogs and don't get the picture, right?

Thanks in advance. Link to him below.. that is my BABY!

Blameless---

I don't appreciate you cutting me down for loving my cat. You don't have to think he is cute... I posted a pic, because I think he is cute. But its very immature to degrade someone like that.

I have an idea..

Thanks everyone! His name is Bo for those of you who asked. That is a very recent pic... he is almost 7 months. Already weighs 9 lbs. Vet said he will be a big boy, but is really healthy. Huge feet!

i ignore my kitties they are nine months old. my male kicks and bites when he plays and it really hurts so i say no bad boy and put him down and ignore him for five or ten min. i would never use violence to punish a cat/kitten. a spray bottle is fine but he might decide that you are playing. if my boy want take the silent treatment and continues i blow in his face or hiss at him which reminds him of how his cat mumma would deal with and ignoring and walking away is how sibling would deal with it.

my little girl doesn't seem to do very naughty things apart from climbing curtains.

Hi! That's a ighty good looking cat there!

I understand your need to find some appropriate "punishment" for a naughty kitty. My cat is also the apple of my eye, but sometimes he does some naughty or annoying things that need to be discouraged. I have never hit him or (I confess) squirted him with a water pistol. Usually, I just hiss at him (Psssttt!) or clap my hands real loud or say "No!" real loud to stop him in his tracks. But when he is doing something annoying like meowing constantly to go out when the weather is bad (I take him out with a leash on walkies) and he won't listen to the most patient reasoning, cajoling, threatenings... then.. I SIN BIN him. I put him in his kitty carrier in the laundry and close the door. All for 10 mins.

usually the bottle will work but at times my cat thinks its a game for some strange reason. But usually a tone of voice the cat is familiar with that knows it means they got in trouble usually works. Always make sure you show them what they did wrong and make sure it's when they did it cause if it's like a 3 hour thing they did, then no the cat won't understand cause the cat already forgot about it. sorry. You do have a very cute cat. whats the cats name???

First of all, I am sorry, your cat is ugly... and anyone who says, my cat is my life... well, there is something wrong with you. I love my dog, but still would not say anything close to that. I am very happy to see her when I get home, and I miss her when I am away for a long time, but she is not 'my world'. You are crazy... With that being said...

Training cats is hard because they have no desire to make their humans happy. it is like having a very selfish friend or spouse, who takes and takes and never gives back.

Cats what something, or want to do something and they do it. If they think they will get in trouble, then they do it when you are not around. It is very hard to train them, accept with a highly tramatic experience, that burns the negative reinforcement into their brains. See with dogs you can use positive reinforcement, but not with normal house cats.

When I used to have a cat he would climb the curtains... the first time he did it when he was a kitten it was cute... every time he tried after that I used the skirt bottle, he would stop and run away, but if I took a shower or left the house, when I came back I could see the curtain moving, and more damage kept appearing. HRM... it is true that cats are smarter than dogs. I don't want a really smart pet, I want a loyal good pet that loves me and wants my attention. Maybe that is my failing.

So I escalated with the cat, I set a trap for him, which is hard to do cause cats are all twitchy and afraid of everything, when he thought I was not there and started messing with the drapes I jumped out at him. He rans away, next day I found new damage on the curtain. Long story short I kept escalating and now I do not have a cat. Come on, if they cause property damage and will not response to being hit with a woofle ball bat, then it is time for them to go.

I like the water bottle idea but no I dont agree with you that they dont get the picture. In all actuality cats are very smart..thats why half the time they thing they are gods and goddesses lol..They are just stubborn and have a mind of their own which in my opinion is what makes them a great pet!

I don't know what you mean by "pop/spat" an animal. If you can reach him in time, I would recommend one finger quickly tapping a kitty's nose once as discipline. It does not injure him and is the way he's designed to learn. Momma cats teach their kittens by a quick tap on the nose -- or any other part they can reach. Pets are not designed to learn the same way humans do. It's not cruel, and your intent isn't to hurt the cat (use one finger only and tap just hard enough to get the cat's attention) but to modify his behavior and truly keep him safer. If he gives you a dirty look, you know he understood you and just doesn't like being disciplined. Who does, really?

I squirt mine with a water bottle with a fine stream. Just a little goes a long way, as you know how cats feel about water. Doesn't work on dogs, they will try to drink it in mid air.

A spray bottle is very good, spooking him by clapping your hands loudly works also (better if he's doing something bad near or on the computer or other electrical equipment, you don't want to spray your computer, lol!)
Sometimes and especially at close range, a simple strong NO! will do well enough also.

I use a squirt bottle but my cat also knows that when I clap my hands and firmly say no it means to stop what you are doing. I taught my cat the word out so when I want her to go out of my bathroom she does so

I agree if i were you i wouldn't hit or smack the kitten i would maybe buy a kennel and try it out. Or when the cat doe something good give him/her a treat. Or yell at her/him.-maybe hard but it might not ever stop if ya don't! Most of this the cat will grow out of it.
