Hi i worked as a dental assistant for 2 years and out of all the electrontic tooth brushes, the dentist i worked for always recommended sonic care. It's expensive, but it works very well. If you get a lot of plaque, i would go with a tooth paste containing baking soda. Afterall the stuff we use to buff your teeth at the end of a cleaning is the same constistancy. If you have any sensetivity go with sensodyne, if not colgate or crest are my favorites.
Most importantly don't forget to floss, and prevent gingivitis:)!

Sonic care. It's a little spendy but awesome!
Toothpaste, I like colgate total but I think best brands is just a matter of opinion. There are so many good toothpaste to choose from.

Sonicare is the proven best ($60-$150), Oral-B is my second choice ($10). Depending on your needs e.g. periodontal (gum tissue), and financial situation.
As for toothpaste, that too, depends on your situation. Are your teeth sensitive, do you want to whiten them, or what? As long as the toothpaste you choose has fluoride in it, you're good to go.
Sensodyne is good for sensitive teeth (use for at least 2 wks to start to notice a difference). Also, if your teeth are sensitive, don't use a toothpaste that's too abrasive. Vivid white is good for whitening. Plain crest is good for overall.

Oral B or Braun are both very good toothbrushes. Rembrandt makes an excellent tooth polish to use with these toothbrushes. When using these brushes, just make sure you don't use them longer than two minutes because your enamel could be damaged and your tooth sensitivity could be heightened. Happy cleaning and happy smiles to you!~
