I rescued a dog from a shelter, she's a small lhasa apso/maltese mix (we think) about 2 or 3 years old. She was spayed on Friday, and is still throwing up at least once daily. She throws up every time she drinks water, and sometimes she is able to keep down food, but she does not eat much at all. I was just wondering if I should bring her in to the vet or if this is normal? I've never had a dog of my own before and I don't know what to expect, I don't want to overreact but I don't want her to do badly either. Help!

You do need to give the vet a call.

Vomiting this long after spaying is not normal. I have had many dogs spayed and was a vet tech. I would take her back to the vet that spayed her and let them have a look at her. Maybe she is running a low temperature or she may need some antibiotics. If she is acting normal, playing and running around try to give her small amounts of water and food. Don't give her much at a time and see if this helps. If she isn't acting normally, go to the vets.

Is she on any type of pain medication or antibiotics? If so, does she vomit after taking her meds? If that is the case, try discontinuing the meds and see if she continues to vomit. I would try to get her to the vet ASAP, she could be dehydrated from all of the vomitting. There is also the possibility of complications from the surgery. Is the incision clean and dry or does it look red and inflammed with discharge (that means infection). Was she vaccinated immediately before or after her surgery. There could be a vaccine reaction occuring as well. Bottom line though...get to your vet and have her checked out.

You are not over reacting, call your vet. This is your new baby. And its not normal I would think, I just had my kitten spayed on Thursday, and she is fine. And my dogs surgery went well too. Call ... good luck

Sometimes, an adverse reaction to the anesthetic can cause vomiting. You should check with your vet if it has been persistent for several days.

Take her to the vet, please, to be safe you shouldn't hesitate. Don't panic, just calmly take her in. She might be having a bad reaction, or she could be having troubles readjusting. But for the sake of the dog, take her in. Hopefully it's nothing, I wish you luck, and pray that she will be fine.

PLEASE take her to a vet ASAP. She got the surgery done on Friday, and she's been throwing up and has very little appetite for 5 days? That's not normal. She may have an infection. Please take her as soon as you can. I'm so sorry that she's sick. :(

Did you feed your dog some of the recalled pet food?
