Make sure you brush your teeth regularly, because particles of food and plaque can get stuck round them causing toothe decay and bad breath.
I made sure i brushed my teeth well but unfortunatly where the metal rings went round my back teeth it made them weaker (i guess plaque got in and i couldn't brush it out). Now 10 years after having my brace off i have to have my first filling in one of them.

Make sure you always have orthodontic wax on-hand for when the brackets irritate the inside of your mouth. By placing the wax over the bracket, you'll eliminate the friction. You can pick this up in the dental section of most pharmacies or ask your orthodontist. Also, pick up a proxy-brush to brush under the wire and floss threaders wouldn't be a bad idea either. You want to make sure you really brush and floss well since tartar can build up around the brackets quite easily.
You may want to take a couple of ibuprofen just before you get your braces tightened each month, it helps to lessen the pain more so than taking it afterward.

Follow your orthodontist instructions fully, keep all appointments and be on time, maintain good hygiene and spend extra time with flossing and brushing, keep lip balm or chap stick on you at all times to protect your lips from cracking and splitting, use Advil or Motrin for pain after placement and after difficult adjustments, and always ask your orthodontist any questions you may have about your treatment. Good luck and congrats on your ortho! You are going to love your new smile when it's all over!

yes. take some advil tomorrow. you will be in pain for the next week. stick to soft foods that require little to no chewing and don't try to floss just yet. trust me. saty away from gummy foods and other foods that may get stuck in your braces.floss 3 times a day and use mouthwash before you go to bed. when you go to get them tightened, take a Tylenol or an Advil 30 minutes before your appointment. this will give the medicine time to work so you won't be in a lot of pain. when you get them tightened, they will hurt as bad as when you first get them on, but for less time. like 2 or 3 days maybe. here is a link to a website so you can choose your next color.

Brush your teeth regularly and more often than usual. After brushing rinse your mouth with scope to see if you missed an spots. I would also buy one of those electronic water squitter things, i forgot what they're called, to wash out anything you missed.

Sure, i know this is everywhere, but I'm just gonna tell you again. Take a pain killer before you get them tightened, it will be in your system and will go into effect when the pain starts. Also, QT milkshakes are great to decrease swelling. If you wear your rubber-bands as often as you should, you will get them off in half the time. Good luck!

Yeah, yeah! There are some rules for keeping them and teeth "in good form"
http://dent.info.md/dental-care/dental-braces-for-making-teeth-healthy/
There is written about plaque, "patients with braces need to be vigilant about dental hygiene" and so on.
