Many of the recent conflicts have been in land locked countries. There have been a few that were access able by water and the Navy was tasked and did conduct operations on a somewhat large scale such as the hunt for Al Qeda off the Horn of Africa. Submarines are small and can only carry a small tactical or recon force and while they have been used for this as well as for some other things like monitoring the test firing of missiles the clandestine type missions you will never hear about.

They do get used for land attacks. US subs launched Tomahawk Missiles in the Gulph War.

"The Tomahawk missile long has been the Navy's premier land attack weapon. Nearly 300 missiles were launched in Operation Desert Storm in 1991, and more than 700 were launched against Saddam Hussien's army in Operation Iraqi Freedom by attack submarines and surface ships. Built by Raytheon Company's Missile Systems Unit, Tucson, Ariz., the 20-foot cruise missile, guided by terrain comparison and digital scene mapping computer software and Global Positioning System satellites, usually is armed with a 700-pound titanium blast-fragment warhead. Simple answer, we do. Submarines launched several cruise/tomahawk missiles during Desert Storm, and again in other theatres of operations in the Mddle East. They are used somewhat sparingly as they are more expensive than Destroyer or Battleship based armaments due to the configuation of underwater launch systems required.

Because we have special submarines for land attacks. They have tracks, are heavily armored, have big cannon that can swivel around.....

It's called a tank, dummy!

Most people don't know it, but we do. The US Navy keeps at least one special ops sub on each coast.

I served on one stationed out of Pearl Harbor.

Here is a link to a picture of it. She is decommed now.

Those two oddball looking things on the aft part of the deck house Zodiac rafts and other equipment. The special ops people exit those and attack islands.

That was in the 90's. I don't know what they use now.

Submarines carry tomahwk missiles, they are launched at sea but they are air to ground missles. So they do.

We do (referring to the USN, of course). SSNs have been using TLAMs for quite a while now. In fact, 4 Ohio class SSBNs are being refitted as SSGNs armed with up to 154 Tomahawk missiles each.

Because they stay off the coast and launch nukes or missiles at targets of choice underwater. We wouldn't get to close to the coast with a sub anyway to risky with the technology today. Besides we haven't had to use subs in years though people are still trained and they are ready for any conflict
