That is the general rule, but it is becoming less common now.
I disagree with it......children learn through asking questions, and if they point to something adults encourage them to vocalise the word of what it is they are pointing to. What are we teaching children....that it is ok to point, but then it is not right?!?!?!?!?!? a bit hypocrytical.
Also, deaf people use their fingers to point at things when communicating in BSL, and they are sometimes looked down upon for doing so......they use their hands along with body language and facial expression, are we saying they are impolite when they point?????
Sorry....that's my rant over and done with, I just think the etiquette rules need adjusting on some points to cater for the needs of everyone!

It really depends on a few things, 1. What age you are and 2.what your pointing at. For example, to be an adult and point at someone less well of than you is wrong, but to be a 3 year old and point at someone fall over or something simlilar, is probably okay because at that age, everything is 'silly'. Bit of a non answer question as there really is no definite answer. We need more info!!

to point at things, to inquire about them, or to indicate that you want that thing, is ok. we sometimes have to point, like in the deli, or, at a store when someone is assisting you to retrieve a high up item.
it is rude to point at things for the purpose of making fun of the thing. an example would be to say look at that ugly dress while you are pointing at the dress and the person wearing it.

It is rude to point at people. When we say, "It's rude to point", I'm pretty sure that we only mean "at people". If you want to reference an object/ thing, I'm sure it's ok to point at it.

Rude to point at people. Not rude to point at inanimate objects. These objects won't care whatever you do.

Maybe it is... my mom always frowns when I point at things... but I do it all the time. Its only rude when you want something and just point at it instead of asking! :-p
(Like if you were wanting the TV remote, and someone walked into the room, and you either said their name or grunted and then just pointed at the remote)
