we're a military family and have moved 5 times in three and a half years. my husbands parents have had our dog for a while, but will be soon making a trip up here this summer. so i can't wait to get her back. my dellema is, she's used to having another dog companion, and i would like to get a puppy anyways. so do i get one before she gets here, or wait until after she comes? she's very much the alpha female, and i don't want her to fel second best to anything...

Wait until she is back with you and settled in. New places are a cause for nervousness and excitement. Give her at least three weeks to establish herself and be comfortable in her new home. Then introduce the pup. She will most likely dominate the pup, and you have to let it happen, but only to a certain extent. She will just be showing the new dog its place in your family, but you have to be sure that YOU are the alpha female, not her.

Wait until after she comes. She needs to not scent another animal there. Then if you get another, she will know she is alpha. When you pick out the second dog, make sure the personality is a follower and not a leader.

wait till she comes home.At least a month. She will have to get used to the new place and the move and those can be very stressful. Get a puppy. Most older dogs will get on quit well with a pup but not an older dog.

I would wait until you have her so that you can introduce the two first before you commit to the puppy and see if it is going to work. That way, you haven't committed to a dog you might not be able to keep. I'd strongly suggest a neutered male - spayed female/neutered male pairs seem to get along the best. Two females are more likely to have issues with pack order.

I believe it would be safer to get the puppy AFTER she comes, because dogs don't take surprises like humans, she could or could not warm up to him so easily. You would want to slowly introduce the puppy to her, and moniter them until they are okay with eachother, or the puppy could be hurt. Good luck, and be safe. I wish you and your family the best. ^.~

I think you should get it after wards. So that your first dog can show the pup who is alfa. If you get it before, the other dog will mark its territory and your other dog would have to be second best.
