vista is a new operating system, so it must has some bugs, If you want to upgrade, then wait a while till the service pack is available then the bugs would be fixed.
I have Vista as a second operating system on my computer. I really liked the new graphic shiny stuff, but this reduce the performance of your machine, it really needs a powerful computer!
If you ask me why I wont use Vista as my first operating system I will tell you why:
1-It slows my machine even that I have a powerful one.
2- some softwares didn't work in it like Adobe reader 8, which is a bad sign that other programs might not work either.
3- Vista needs longer time to start and to shut down than XP.
4- I don't need the HIGH level of security that Vista offer, may be if am using my computer as a server I would think about it, anyway, any anti virus would do the job.
5- You don't need to install drivers, Vista will do it. But it didn't recognize my new HP printer, which doesn't have a Vista CD to install its driver, so you might need to go check the web for drivers that vista doesn't support.

The things I liked about Vista is the new Aero look and the Chess game :D
In my opinion it doesn't deserve that high price.

Actually you can get the same look in win xp, check this pack: http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/OS-Enhancements/Vista-Transformation-Pack.shtml

Since you're a college student, your college may have Vista available for you with a student discount. Many colleges and universities have steeply discounted software from Microsoft, Adobe and other companies for their students. I've heard some universities have Vista for as low as $25.00. Check with the college bookstore or the IT department.

It isn't much different than XP to be honest. It looks pretty fancy and cool, but it isn't worth paying 100 dollars for.

But don't believe the crap about the glitches and bugs in Vista; my computer has never had any problems with vista

Vista sucks. It's the same XP with less security.

you know what you have and do not know what you will get.
so save the cash and be happy with win xp for now.
after a year or two you will see the light...
