took my nissan to a garage and they replaced the complete distributer and changed both coils,it ran good for a day.started doing some checking my self and the secondary coil is not firing.replaced the coil again,not the problem.traced the pos. and neg. wires they seem to be ok coil wire to distributer looks ok. running very rough, black smoke from the exhaust.i have not replaced the I.C.module yet,but it was new with the distributer.

try pulling off one coil wires and then start it. if it starts try the other one. one at a time. if it wont start that is the coil to trace .
take off that wire and put on other side of cap. if it starts its the dist. also check the plugs. them self's. next if dose not start switch plug wires for coil that will not work. with other one. this will not harm the coils if you ground the one not in use to the block. if its just the dist. it is not timed right not letting the second coil time to reach the plugs.
black smoke is too much gas check vac hoses too
this is just a start write back with what you find
ps some times they have loose parts inside the cap (bad cap)

Check the rotor in the distributor. The contacts are a little finicky. If they show any signs of being burnt, you need to replace it. Make sure you get it set up properly (gap, etc.) as this is what usually causes the burning.

go back to the garage and make them fix it for free. If you paid by credit card then begin a charge dispute with the card company. You paid for a repair and didn't get it. If you wanted to get your hands dirty then you wouldn't have brought it to a shop.
Call you DMV office and find out if there have been any complaints against the garage and ask what recourse you have.
