my 5 year old setter is a house dog .Recently a female in heat has been coming to my yard, He is off his food but drinking lots. He is also tearing the ground with his paws and barking more. My main concern is his lack of food . he will eat some but we have to coax . is this normal and how long can it go on. I have spoken to a vet and she says not to worry as he seems to have lots of energy and his urine is normal.

sometimes adult male dogs will lose their appetite if a female in heat is around, just feed him at regular times, but don't take the food away if he doesn;t eat it, worry when he seems low on energy or in pain, his hormones are acting up and right now all he can think of is keep the species going, i have a male dog and he acts the same in alike scenarios, so as long as the female stays around the house the situation will stay around the same...

A year ago, one of my Yorkies (Teddy) was to be mated with a little female of the same breed. The female stayed with us for the day but, when it came to it, there was NO way she'd accept Teddy's advances! Her owner had to take her home.

Following that disappointing day, Teddy would not settle. He was off his food, he'd walk about all night, he stopped playing. I think your dog has 'expectations' which are not forthcoming and, therefore, he is slightly off-colour and behaving strangely. It will pass. Plenty of exercise to keep him fit and a few tasty treats should do the trick in time. I know one panics when a pet won't eat but, as long as the vet is satisfied nothing is wrong, it WILL get better. Your 'boy' is love-sick, that's all! Give him a big hug!!!

It's perfectly normal for a male to go off his food if there's a female in heat. As long as he's drinking, don't worry, he's just got other things on his mind. He'll lose a little weight but he'll be fine. As soon as the female is out of season he'll return to normal.

If he has balls, that's the problem. All of that doggie estrogen is driving him nuts. It is not something he can control. He's not going to starve himself, but he's wicked confused about the world right now.

Just like any male who can't get his way with the ladies, he is in mega-sulk mode. It must be torture for him if a ***** in season is near. Be careful, it can make him very ill.
