Because of personal reasons, I have had to make the decision to postpone the second year of my Modern Languages Degree (French Spanish and Italian) untill September. I have chosen this degree as I have always been told that the ability to speak foreign languages means earning rly good money, especially in the UK as not many people speak more than one language... however... everyone who I know who has taken a modern language degree has said they never used their skills and regretted studying it in the first place.

Is this type of degree any use to someone who is fiercly ambitious and wants to earn a lot of money in a good job? I definately don't want to be a teacher or a translator forever.... the areas that have interested me are law and subsequently coronary work, journalism and advertising.

Any advice would be much appriciated as I feel a bit lost at the moment!

Many Thanks x

people who are bilingual have a better chance of getting a good job. If you are applying for a job in the medical field for example, and it came down to you and another that only spoke english, I would think that you would be the choice, especially if you knew spanish with the growth of the spanish speaking community.
My husband is a realtor and he gets all the spanish speaking in his office, since no one else can help them.... he does quite well.

With your interest in journalism, advertising & in fact, in any other making-money-quick fields, the more languages you are good at the more opportunities will open up for you. If you are young & with your sights far into the future, how about add Chinese as well? With China coming up in lea[s & bounds, countless doors would be wide open for talented people well versed in foreign languages, as they aim to conquer the world!

Of course. How else would we all communicate? With our hands?
