Holly C seemed to answer most of your question. However, if the coldsore 'bursts or erupts' i.e., it's not just a lump anymore, perfume can dry it out. It's very painful but it works eventually. When you first feel a coldsore though I've found Zovirax is good if you catch it quick enough. Don't kiss anyone though (I presume it's on your lips) otherwise you will pass it on. Unfortunately once you've got the virus it doesn't leave your system.
Happy coldsores ... :-(

Please don't get scared by the word herpes. I had cold sores all the time when I was younger, but probably haven't had one in at least 5 years. The herpes simplex virus is passed from your mother through the blood while you are in the womb. The way the virus spreads from person to person is by a cold sore that is open and oozing coming into contact with a mucous membrane of another person. A remedy I use is a styptic pencil which is an alum product that is used to stop bleeding. It is used by some people on shaving cuts. When you first feel the cold sore coming on, wet the pencil and gently run the end around the sore. It helps to let the water sit on it for a while and let it thicken. When it dries, it will feel puckered. It tastes bitter, but worth it. It can be reapplied as needed. This has kept my cold sores from blistering at all and also helps with the pain. I don't know much about Zovirax, but I do know that it is used for viral conditions. If the sore does blister and burst, Carmex is very good to use until the sore is gone.

Why do we get anything?

Cold sores are a viral infection with herpes simplex virus. It is probably spread mostly by lip to lip contact. (Kissing!) A large percentage of the population has the antibody. Despite having antibodies we don't seem to readily develop immunity and the problem recurs when we are run down. It also flares up in UV light so sunlight and reflected sunlight in snow may set it off.

Specific anti-viral ointments like zovirax help, but only if applied at the onset. In severe episodes prescribed oral ant-viral drugs are used.

I used to suffer really bad with them, I tried all the creams and just go nowhere with them. I then went to my doctor who prescribed me some tablets, they were zovirax tablets and these really cleared them up well, and I hardly suffer with them now. I havn't had a really bad flare up sincee I took those tablets which was around 12 years ago.

well, dear i hate to break it to you, but you've got herpes. probably herpessimplex1. thus meaning its a virus...b/c its a virus, treatment is practically impossible and the virus just has to run its course. Of course you can get prescriptions if its persistant, but over the counter methods help just about the same.
