Your aunt is justifying her smoking habit. Yes, some non-smokers get emphysema, but there are MANY more complications from smoking including cancer of various organs, heart disease and high blood pressure. And smoking DOES increase your risk for emphysema.

go light a fire with just cardboard or wood-and inhale deeply off of the smoke, you will notice that your body will not be happy with you and will let you know this. I do not smoke but personally think smoking is part of our american heritage (the whole indians and tobacco thing, early settlers farming and using tobacco all the time, and etc), even though i have no misconceptions about how bad it is for you-any time you are burning something and inhaling it is bad for you, vaporizing it (evaporating the active chemicals in substances without actually burning the material) is a lot more effective means of getting the tobacco into your bloodstream while not destroying your lungs-although its still not exactly good for you in most respects. by the way about your aunt, everyones body is different, and lifestyle/genes play a big part, just like one guy may die at an early age from eating too much bacon and another may live a lot longer than the typical human life expectancy.

Smoking definately is bad for you. I had an uncle die from emphysema which was really rough watching him die. I now have a brother with lung cancer and he had chemo once, now he's going through radiation and when he's done with that he has to do chemo again. It's really rough watching someone that you love going through so much pain and not being able to help them. I quit smoking years ago and I am so glad that I did. As for your aunt she is rather fortunate not to of gotten emphysema or cancer, but alot of people do.

I'm not sure why but some people react to cigarette smoking different than others. For instance, my dad has smoked for over 40 years and has emphysema. However, one of my close friends died from lung cancer a few years ago from cigarette smoking..he was 17. In my own personal opinion cigarettes are disgusting. They make your teeth and hands yellow and the smell is enough to make me throw-up. So smoke if you want, just stay away from me.

With all due respect, but your aunt is wrong. Those emphysema patients are or were smoking. And so were the lung cancer patients... and the patients with Büergers disease (leaving them with less limbs)... even the patients with cervical cancer were smoking to a larger extent.. and that is a cancer with a completely different cause... so yes, smoking is quite a killer. Though legal still.

Second hand smoke is worse. Maybe those patients of hers were victims of 2nd hand.
I think smoking is HORRIBLE--it's no joke/scare tactic/lie/rumor.
My grandpa died from it. My mom was in the hospital when he did die of emphysema, and she said it was like he was drowning. He was gasping deeply for air...then he died.

no?! really?! (sarcastic voice)
uuuh, ok first of all, they teach that its BAD for you in like, school, so like they wouldn't advertise not smoking in school. If it wasn't all taht bad, then they wouldn't really care. like soda, thats goood or REALLY bad for u but they still have it on the shelves. If smoking was like that, they wouldn't care for it, just like soda.
ALSO, there r MILIONS of people dying becuase they smoked, enough said? (their have been professional studies on it, so no its not a scam)
why would they use a scare tactic if like america's economy( part of it) is leaning on the shoulders of the tobacco indusrty? they would promote it, wouldn't they?
about it ur aunt, there was this lady that we met, and for like 40 years she smoked packs a day, and like when she finally like turned 60, she got cancer...
ya so from the facts i just stated, smoking isn't really that bad! :D
(that was sarcasm)

i think it is exaggerated. a couple cigs per day is fine. abusing them (i.e., several a day) is clearly unhealthy. the point is, abuse of anything is bad.
