I had a young, healthy dog die in her sleep with no symptoms a few years ago. The vet told me he couldn't say for certain what had happened without an autopsy, but he told me that sometimes pets can have hidden problems that can cause sudden death, such as heart problems, strokes or aneurysms. He told me he'd seen a perfectly healthy (appearing) kitten drop in the middle of playing - it turned out the kitten had a heart defect. If that was the case for your cat, there isn't anything you could have done to prevent it from happening.
I'm so sorry for your loss.

That's awful, I'm really sorry.
I'm afraid it does happen, but so rarely, you've been very unlucky. We hear of seemingly healthy humans dying suddenly in their sleep, it happens to animals too. I once saw a post-mortem on a young staffy who had died suddenly in his sleep. It took ages to find the cause, eventually they found evidence of an almost imperceptible heart defect (ever so slightly enlarged). I would guess that the majority of these cases are heart related.
I know it's been a year already, but eventually, time does heal. Did you have a funeral for your cat? If not, it isn't too late to organise something to help you say goodbye, anything that will help you. I lost my cat suddenly, and had rather a sudden funeral so it all seemed a bit unreal. Even tho she was 18 and I had a lot to be grateful for - that she was old and didn't suffer - I still felt a bit cheated because I wanted to be with her. I'm not of course comparing this to the loss of a young animal, just saying that grief isn't rational and it takes time to pass.
There are pet bereavement advice lines you can look up on the 'net - might sound silly to some, but it's what they're there for if you're still having trouble dealing after this long.

I am so sorry that you lost your cat so suddenly. It must be really hard becuase you had absolutely no warning. I have heard and read literature about these things. Apparently, the most common reason for sudden death in cats are cardiomyopathy, congenital heart defects or heartworm disease. The only really good way to try to figure out the cause of a sudden death is a post-mortem examination.
I read about a couple whose cat suddenly dies. One moment this cat was jumping from one chair to the next. The cat landed on the next chair dead. There were no symptoms, absoutely none that something was wrong. The post-mortem examonation revealed the presence of 4 heartworms in the cats pulmanory artery.

This is a sad story but I'm sure your kitty went quickly and without pain due to a heart defect. There may have been nothing you could have done to help but didn't you give your kitty a nice life? The good news is that there are tons of homeless, cold, and hungry cats out there looking for loving homes and nice people to scratch their ears and I am sure you would make a fine home. You will never forget your kitty's death but a new little baby may lift the guilt.

I have never heard of that at such a young age for a cat..but it could have had a heart condition, just like humans who die young. It's hard, but the best thing I think is to get another kitten/cat and love it as much as you loved the one you lost..and you will make one new kitten/cat with a new home very, very happy. Good Luck

Was an autopsy done on the cat?
There are many reasons that could have caused the death - heart worm, parvo, heart attack, or any number of things.
Maybe you could find someone who is a pet psychic (if you believe in that sort of thing), in hopes of finding the answer. Below is just one of the thousands of websites related to the subject. (i found it through the yahoo search engine)
I am very sorry for your loss, and hope you find closure soon.

i'm so sorry that you lost your kitty. i know what it's like when your kitty gets sick and dies and it's so hard emotionally. Maybe your cat had a heart problem that was undetected. Only a Vet would know for sure. and again, I'm sorry for your loss, you may not think so right now, but it will get better, my prayers are with you.
