I had a crush on this guy for 5 years and I finally told him, and to my surprise he felt the same about me but we both thought that the other wouldn't want to date the other one. So we started dating and it lasted for 1 1/2 years but we new way to much about each other that it just couldn't work out in a relationship. Then we ended up getting in a fight and now we don't even talk to each other and it's terrible because we were like best friends we did so much together and my boyfriend before I started dating him totally trusted me with our friendship and was cool with it. So tell him before it's to late and enjoy the moment!

I imagine they know...why would you keep in touch with them or spend time around them "after a long time" if you didn't like them?

Yes, you should let them know. Keeping to yourself is not encouraged. Surely you want the relationship to go next step.
