Please differentiate between the Soul & Spirit of a person, or are they the same thing? Or do they exist at all?
Most wouldn't argue we have bodies, (unless I put this question in the Philosophy or Psychology section), I'm looking for ideas on Soul & Spirit, what they are, what their functions are. If you think they don't exist, please include why.
Thanks
Enjoy

Man is a SPIRIT That has a soul that lives in a body. We are spirit our bodies are only what houses our spirit, and our spirit has a soul. In our soul is our will, intellect and emotion. Now That is why we cant understand GOD because we try to do it in our Flesh or with natural things. But GOD is a spirit and in order to understand HIM one must use HIS spirit. Now if you feed your soul spiritual things ie. (things of GOD) then thats what u would become and if u feed your soul natural things that your natural flesh understand then u will never understand GOD. Hope i cleared up something at least. lol

Yes, spirit/soul two words but mean the same.
It goes Spirit, Mind, Body.
Here's a good description of all three:

The Spirit or Soul

This is described as having no mass, no wave-length,no energy and no time or location in space except by consideration or postulate.
The spirit is not a "thing". It is the "creator" of things.
The usual residence of the soul, (spirit, awareness of awareness unit....YOU) is in the skull or near the body.
YOU are your own immortal soul.
The soul can be in one of four conditions.
1. Entirely separate from a body or bodies.
2. Near a body and knowingly controlling the body.
3. In the body (the skull).
4. An inverted condition, compulsively away from the body and unable to approach it.

There are degrees of each of the above 4 conditions.
The most optimum of these from the standpoint of man, is the second.

The Mind
This is a communication and control system between the spirit and it's (his) environment.
The mind is a network of communications and pictures, energies and masses, which are brought into being by the activities and interactions of the spirit with the Physical Universe and other spirits/individuals.
These activities include the operating of a body and the solving
of problems related to survival and existence.
The mind has 2 Parts:
The Analytical Mind. The keynote of this mind is awareness. One knows what one is concluding and knows what one is doing.
The Reactive Mind. This is a stimulus response mechanism.
This mind acts below the level of consciousness. It never stops operating unlike the Analytical Mind which can be less aware or even completely unconscious.

The Body
A carbon/oxygen engine. This can best be studied in such books as "Grey's Anatomy" and other anatomical texts.

From what I am taught a soul or spirit is the same thing. The type of energy that it is comprised of I really dont know.
I think that it is limited what can know in this life time and we have to show faith.

If we had all the answers then there would be no mysterie or challenge because everything would be right in out face. It is said that if we are faithful and obediant to the commandments in time we can know the secrets of life.

The goal in life is to gain knowledge that we could not in the premortal state and show are true intentions whether they be bad or good or somewhere in between.

Are babies born with sin? Are kids who are even 8 do really really bad things? Or is it learned from the enviorment around them and negative influence?

It is a promise in the book of Mormon that if we read it and ask God if the church and book are true he will manifest it through the holy ghost. Once you know the church is true and you live rightiously you can go to the temple and I have heard of some pretty cool experiances that have happened in regaards to souls and spirits there. But you have to have the faith to get there first.

If you could learn these truths would you change even for a short while?

To gain eternal knowledge and it requires faith and obediance.

I testify that behind the scenes there is a spiritual war going on that we can feel but cant see.
I testify that in my life living and sacrificing much like, drinking, sexual sin, obediance to the commandments and things to that nature I have gained eternal knowledge and God has confirmed this church.
I know there is a living prophet who guides the true church of Christ and that Gospel has been restored.

The soul is the same thing as the spirit, but soul would be the more accurate word.

It is the part of us that is immortal and never dies. The soul does NOT exist before the body. The Catholic Church teaches that the soul is created out of nothing (ex nihilo) by God. Some Protestants (but not many) teach that the soul is created in the reproductive process of the parents.

God is responsible for the creation of the soul - mankind is responsible for its fallen nature.

Ecclesiastes 12:7 states that at death "the dust returns to the earth as it was, and the spirit returns to God who gave it" (RSV).

It is the part of us that will either spend eternity in Heaven or in Hell.

God bless you.

Well, after you die you'll find out...but maybe then it will be too late. But this is how I view it. The soul and the spirit are basically the same thing. There is a physical and spiritual world. Our bodies belong to the physical world therefore we cannot grasp the idea of a spiritual world. Our souls live in a temporary body. It simply is the chrysalis. After we die, we shed our body and we move on to the place we will spend our eternalty depending if we believe in Jesus or not. For Christians we will be a caterpillar that shed its chrysalis and now is in heaven like a butterfly.

I'd say that man has a metaphorical spirit. The intelligence and personality of a person is not a physical thing, but instead the ephemeral result of a physical process.

Consider that you are the same person today that you were twenty years ago. Your identity has been constant, yet almost every molecule of your body has since been replaced at some point.

I don't believe that this exists in any real way after the body dies, though. It's just a nice bonus of our physical complexity.

the difference between being and having is quite distinct.
Body, soul & spirit are things we posess (so long as we perceive things dualistically)...not things that we are.

When examined nondualistically there are no distinctions to make...

...but for the sake of being more to the point of your question:

you could use the analogy of a computer...
the body is the vessel/the housing
the soul is the processor
the spirit is the processING.
the Self is both the user and the data

After God formed adam from the clay. He then breathed spirit into him. This is the best evidence that we have a spirit.

Spirit = Life
Here is a scripture that includes all 3 at one time.

1Th 5:23 And the God of peace himself sanctify you wholly; and may your spirit and soul and body be preserved entire, without blame at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

I'm coming to the conclusion that soul and spirit are one and the same. When the body dies the soul/spirit lives on. I truly believe that the soul/spirit is what animates the body.
hope this helps...
