Its a mood disorder where you have rapid changes from one mood to another. From elated, and on top of the world, you can do anything you want, to everything is hopeless and having suicidal thoughts. Alot of the times these mood swings are triggered by something insignificant. I hate to use my own personal experience, because it turns out it was a medical issue causing me symptoms of bi-polar disorder. But one night my mom said I don't know why you stay up on the computer so late, you should get some sleep. I cried for hours and wanted to kill myself. That same night I wrote her a long email and told her how I felt. She got me in to see a pshyciatrist the next day.

Bipolar is a mental disease caused from a chemical imbalance in the brain. To be bipolar you must only have one of each disease - mania & depression. It can be mild or severe. It usually causes a person to have a risk behavior - this could be a drug or drinking problem, risky sexual behavior, or even an overspending & shopping behavior.
Drugs like lithium & constant treatment from a doctor can control & allow a normal life. It is sometimes hard to get a bipolar person to accept treatment. Many people confuse split personalities & other dieases with bipolar. A few bipolar famous people are Patty Duke, Picasso, Einstein & many actors & inventors. The advantage of mania is the rapid thoughts & lack of need for sleep makes people very creative - not worth the creativeness for the disruption of your life.

Bipolar Disorder, formerly known as "manic-depression" (what boxer Mike Tyson has) is a mental illness, specifically an affective disorder/mood disorder, caused by a chemical imbalance that requires medication to control it, in which the individual suffering from the disorder experiences symptoms of major depression, the depressive stage, and during the "manic stage", symptoms of hyperactivity, racing thoughts, a sense of euphoria, grandiose thoughts (thinking they're more important than every1 else) and poor impulse control. A person in the manic stage will sometimes behave very promiscuously, having sex with lots of people they don't know, spending all their money and going on major shopping sprees and some even maxing out their credit cards, quit their jobs, stay up all night partying, or even doing creative things like painting, writing, exercising, etc. The person in the manic stage has an unbelievable amount of energy and they speak very fast, due to their racing thoughts. Some people might think this sounds like a good thing but it's not when they do foolish things like spend all their money, max out their credit cards, quit their jobs suddenly or quit school, are unable to sleep at night or ever, and have sex with random people often without protection. In the depressive stage they experience the exact opposite effect of symptoms, which is why it's called "bipolar" because they experience polar opposites of moods. In the depressive stage they become clinically depressed and experience symptoms of excessive crying, a sense of worthlessness, feel no sense of interest or joy in anything, withdraw from relationships, some inflict bodily harm such as cutting themselves or drinking out of despair, they usually sleep excessively, and fifteen percent of depressed bipolar people commit suicide, and many more try or at least think about doing so. Both stages are equally damaging to themselves and their relationships.

It is a type of mental health issue, in which the bipolar person flicks from one emotional extreme to the other. It was once lumped in with schizophrenia, but is now seen as an individual disease.
A typical bipolar person will move from, for example, an extremely happy and hyperactive mood to a down, almost clinically depressed state.
Drugs will usually be prescribed to try to rebalance the person's mental state, though the are not always effective, often in conjunction with some kind of psycho-therapy.

This is a mental condition that causes SEVERE mood swings as you may call them. You will have manic moods. Very extreme highs and very extreme lows.
Much like a pendalum swinging, it goes from being happy/excited (positive)- to sad/angry (negative)...
This is a condition that can be helped with proper treatment, but it can cause people to be sweet one minute and terrible the next. Many love/hate relationships are due to one person, or both people being bi-polar.

bipolar disorder is when you are sooooooooooo happy and suddenly you get sooooooooo sad and depressed at the same time.. it's a kind of severe emotion instability, like very serious mood swings happening in less than 24 hours ..
this disorder should be cured by a doctor because it is very serious...

Basically it refers to manic depression which means an individual can swing from elation (mania) to severe depression. When in the mania the individual may react in arisky manner and act dangerously to themselves and others.

I'm not a health care professional, but my understanding of the term as a lay person is that it describes a constant oscillation between mental extremes, such as mania and depression.

it is a psychologic disorder where a person can change their mood from one moment to the next. For example, at one moment the person could be happy and hyper, but then literally at the next moment the person could be mad, angry, bothered.
