I would say to name your dog for his personality, coat color, or anything that makes him unique and special! Maybe you want to name him something in Italian, because that is also part of your heritage, and it will give you something to talk about when asked what his name means! : )
It's really up to you and your mom, but just name him something that you like, your mom likes, and, of course, the dog likes!
Also, I have heard that it is best not to give your dog a one syllable name because it could be confused with one syllable commands such as sit, down, heal, fetch, ect.
Good luck choosing a name and raising your dog!

My dog is a shep-retriever mix also, hes white and not too big, and is named Courage.

My suggestions are Rudy (pronounced roody), Red, Ranger, Courage, Max, Scooter, Boo, or Ollie.

Your choices are great, but sometimes watching the dog will lead you to the perfect name. I had 4 pugs..ET, Peeter lorie, Marty feldman, and Ms. Betty Davis..my pugs looked like their names.. a name may come to you when you least expect it.

I like a few of the suggestions already out there - but another good one for a big dog is Bruno :)
