I know how to ride a bike and I'm in decent shape. Is there any kind of preparation or anything I should know before I start?

Abso-f*%$-lutely!!! A cool helmet, lotsa fluids and motivation, the need for speed, the fact that your rig needs PLENTY of upgrades ( EBAY, Price Point, BlueSky Cycling websites for FANTASTIC deals bro! ), the hills, the dirt, the heat, the Sea Otter Classic Races, the incredible RED BULL RAMPAGE DVD set, and some hanging out w/ fella riders----all make mountain biking well WORTH every second---and you'll realize what adrenaline is all about------

Yes, first go out and buy a book of local trails or visit the forums section of MTBR.com for some suggestions. What you are looking for is a good map, the difficulty level, and a general time for the ride. Knowing what to expect is the key. Start with a short ride.

If you start out with rides that are shorter then you don't have to do much prep. Ride & have fun...if something goes wrong then you can still hike back to the car. It also gives you a chance to see if you're really interested in continuing to do the sport.

Once you decide you truly enjoy it then you're ready to start buying stuff & prepping for longer rides.

Here's my brain dump on how to get started after you know you want to continue riding......

*Buy a book called "Mountain Bike Like a Champion" by Ned Overend. It discusses skills you'll need & you can practice while on the trail

*Gather Tools to take with you:
-Patch kit (glueless stickers are my favorite)
-Tire levers (for removing tire)
-Pump (small manual pump...wrap duct tape around the middle to fix small problems)
-Multi-tool w/ chain tool
-Folding pliers
-Tire Boots (For ripped sidewall)
-Spare tube
-Chain pins (Fix a broken chain)
-Whistle
-Cell Phone

*Always wear a helmet

*Learn to fix a punctured tire.

*Wear sunscreen

*Learn to lube your chain. You'll have to clean & re-apply lube every couple of rides because of the dirt.

*Always tell someone where you are going. Ride with other riders if possible.

*Buy a camelbak for water. Make sure it has 100oz capacity. I would recommend the M.U.L.E. for its storage, and small footprint on your back.

******* HAVE FUN! *******
